I had the same fears when I was deciding about grad school (which seems forever ago). I have since learned that grad school would have been the worst decision I could have made. Sometimes you have to just close your eyes, jump, and see where you land. Move to that new city. Grow that garden. Consider that family.

I think these days people forget about the "simple" things in life. We're told over and over not to waste our brains or our talent, but I think if we get too caught up in "wasting" them, we miss out on a lot of good things in life, the good things that aren't measured by a paycheck or a corner office or the money in the bank.

Keep listening to yourself!

maggie, my dear, i agree with your "brassy new friend." you have your BA already. why not take a break from academia and figure out if grad school is right for you by just living it up, generally speaking. discover new interests, new hobbies, new places. i think it will be good for your soul and mind.

i think people forget that the beauty of college/grad school is that you can take time away from it to figure yourself out. college/grad school will always be there for you.

but whatever you decide on, i wish you all the best.

I had to make a similar decision like this. In the end the criteria for the decision was what makes me happy?. It seems too corny, too simple to be right, but it worked for me. I think doing what makes you happy (if you know what it is) regardless of expectations otherwise is an indication of personal integrity: be true to yourself and you can't go wrong.
