history:Hisana died in the living world and was sent to Inuzuri, a district in Rukongai, the place where all souls from the living world go after death. Life in Inuzuri was difficult for anyone. People forced to avoid murderers and thieves, or to become them themselves, all in the name of survival. However, it was even more difficult for a young woman with a small baby to take care of. Hisana struggled to make a life there for her and her baby sister, but as the days wore on, she began to wonder if she could possibly do it. Desperate and at her wits end, Hisana abandoned her baby sister in the harsh conditions of Inuzuri.

She regretted this. Since that day, Hisana had not stopped searching for her, but she was unable to find her.

Some time after this, Hisana met the man who would be her husband, a noble from one of the more powerful and influential noble families, Kuchiki Byakuya. Against the wishes of his family, he married her and behind her laid the past of poverty and struggle she had always wanted to escape. However, despite her marriage, despite leaving behind that which pained her, there was something she could not forget. Hisana was unable to forget her regret or the baby sister she had abandoned. She searched, every day of her five-year marriage, for her sister, never paying much mind to the chances that she might not be alive. All that mattered to her was this selfish wish of finding her baby sister.

Hisana was not given long to search. Though her husband seemed all right (though concerned) with her searching, her body did not seem to have the same wants. Hisana grew weaker day by day, until, finally, her illness started to take its toll. Hisana did not give up and refused to give in to her body's weakness. She persisted until, finally, one day, she couldn't push it any farther. In the spring of their fifth year together, Hisana implored Byakuya to find her sister and protect her, as she could not. She also asked him not to tell her sister that she had a sister, as she felt she had no right to be called a sister.

She passed quietly after expressing her regret to him and thanking him for the 'dream' of happiness he provided her.

personality: Hisana is a very soft-spoken woman. She is very careful about what she says and to whom she says it. Most of this is likely because of living in Inuzuri, where people could be killed for less than a look. She would prefer to avoid conflicts when necessary, keeping her head bowed and her eyes averted, even though she might feel like reacting. Hisana knows how to keep herself under the radar, mostly a little fly on the wall no one notices until it buzzes past. She bottles up her feelings inside and resolves to solve the inner turmoil in another way, usually more productive and careful than lashing out at those who may deserve it.

She is very respectful, speaks politely and a lot of the time appearing to be submissive, compared to her more vocal and high-spirited younger sister. She knows what is expected of her and fulfills that as best she can. She does not like to disappoint. However, Hisana does have pride and there are some things even she won’t do. She will typically politely refuse if it is something she feels against her moral standing or harmful to herself or others, but if she says no, that answer won’t change. She’s very stubborn and does not change her mind very easily.

This stubbornness translates to everything she does, be it chores around the house, helping someone or even in her own personal life. She does not give up and she will not give in, no matter how poor her health may have been or how bad the weather might be. Whatever obstacles stand in her way, she will find a way around them. This strength is probably what kept her going most times.

She’s rather kind and gentle, which probably made her a target back in her world, where people loved the easy types. Instead of fighting, she will do what she can, which may not be raising a sword, but can be helping out the wounded or sick, or taking care of things at home.

Hisana appreciates the small things. Instead of expensive dinners and clothes, she’d rather sit out under the moon and gaze at the sky, or sit in the gardens with even cheaply made tea. She doesn’t believe in waste or useless spending, but she isn’t likely to say something if someone else is. She’ll just politely decline anything offered that she doesn’t need, and might suggest giving it to someone who might really use it.

Over all, Hisana has a very serene personality. She’s calm about most things and is not likely to get worked up about much. She approaches things with a logical head on her shoulders, even when emotions like fear or anger grip her, and would prefer to talk things out over yelling or striking out. She can look at all sides and decide what is most sensible, or if she should say anything at all. Things that might usually rile others up, Hisana will look at and perhaps try to diffuse. She likes things to be happy and peaceful.

That does not mean Hisana doesn’t get angry. When she does, it is usually a very calm sort of anger. She can be a bit more demanding and a little more forceful than she might normally seem, but Hisana rarely ever gets irrationally angry. If she does speak out, she’ll be as steady as possible with it and try not to show too much that she’s bothered.

Most of all, Hisana has a lot of issues with guilt. They seem to be centered around her character in Bleach, and until she works those out, she will quite likely seem she is ‘not worthy’ of some of the things she has. Not to say that she doesn’t appreciate them or love them, just that she doesn’t know how she could be so lucky. She’s a very humble woman with some self-loathing issues that need a swift kick in the pants.

She’s more likely to hide her feelings though, and talk to those she trusts completely (and not even then, really, because she doesn’t like being a burden). Trust is a little hard to come by with her, having lived around tricksters who hurt or kill others for their own profit, but she will soften up to some eventually, and it is definitely worth it.

abilities/powers: Hisana doesn't have any powers or special skills in canon. Instead, Hisana grew into the life of Inuzuri. She can avoid danger and hide very well, if she needs to, and is quite capable of stealing or getting what she needs - enough so she can survive on her own. Hisana can also cook basic meals and forage for food. She's able to clean and do other household chores, as well.

first person sample: [Large, violet eyes stare down with confusion and concern, diluted by a logical calm that demands she not show much in a situation where the control has been stolen from her. She's cold and hiding it not-so-well, she's lost, she has no idea what this is, but this is not what she expected when she closed her eyes that day...

Her fingers seem to be searching the edge of the device, searching for something.]

I don't understand... [A soft murmur to herself. She doesn't elaborate, looking up, around and back down towards the strange item.]

This is not...

[A little louder this time, but still soft and still more to herself. The image moves--up, down, to the left--before she finally decides she's done what she intended to do a few minutes ago and takes in a slow breath. She forces a little smile, still maintaining that calm air about her, and speaks directly to the cellphone in her hands.]

I believe this is right. [A little nod.] Is there someone I can speak to about this place?

I would be grateful for any assistance.

[She bows her head, a bit deeper this time, and follows it with a clumsy little fumble with the cellphone. Hisana straightens and all that can be seen is the top of her head as she figures out how to end her call.]

third person sample: The gardens always reflected a certain beauty and peace that could not be found anywhere, a peace so otherworldly, she could almost believe it to be a dream. The soft fragrances that one would be met with, the gentle sound of water flowing, nature's song on the wind's breath... these things, to Hisana, were what she liked best about these grounds, this place of solitude where she could allow those thoughts drift away. Her concerns seemed so little and she so much greater, so much more capable of doing those things she set out to do. Thoughts like 'I will find her today' or 'Byakuya-sama and I will eat here, in the gardens' seemed like they could be the truth.

Here, in the gardens, her spirit could not waver. Here, her strength did not seem capable of waning. Here, she could allow herself to dream like a selfish child. She dreamed of the day when family would be more than a loose word, where she was not a burden, but a great asset. There would be happiness and smiles, even from him.

Hisana kneeled beside the river, eyes watching the flow of its crystal clear waters. How nice and simple it would be if life were so peaceful, so straight and set on its directed course, like the water flowing downstream?

She dipped her fingers into the water, allowing the somewhat warm waters to flow easily around, a gentle caress no stronger than the light breeze ruffling the soft petals on the trees nearby.

She smiled, softly, closed her eyes and waited, listening to nature, to the breeze, to the flow of water that soothed her restless spirit. She would go again, today. She would leave behind this privileged life, this life he had been kind enough to give her and she would look hard, in every corner she could reach, before nightfall. And then... then she could return to him, show him what it was that meant so much to her and finally, finally repay the debt she incurred the day she had left his side to rummage through the trash-city.
