"Hello we are conducting research, blahblahblah, ans we need to talk to the person 18 years of age or older who has had the most recent birthday"
well... that would be me...
"Erm.... they're not... er... home right now..."

Best way you could have handled it.

Typically when telemarketers get me on the phone, I tell them I'm not interested in whatever they're offering. If they keep on their spiel, I repeat that I'm not interested and hang up.

Reminds me, though, of a line from an Air Farce skit from a few years back:
"I believe in shaking hands, not giving the finger... not unless you're phoned by a telemarketer..."

Oh oh! Print this out, keep it by your phone and I guarantee that rather dread the marketing you will emit from your nose whatever fluid happens to be in your mouth whenever a telemarket calls.

hehe yeah. but then i feel bad. :P i mean its not this telemarketer's fault that she's phoning, its this stupid capitalist society and the stupid fat cows at the top making money. x_x i think its years in retail that have given me the soft heart for the ppl at the bottom of the totem pole.

Or maybe I'm just a wuss. (Yeah, that's probbaly it...)

IMO, nothing wrong with feeling bad for the people at the bottom.

And, FWIW, I don't think you're a wuss. =)

Telemarketers usually try to sell you something, where as people doing phone research often offer money. :) Usually something very small, a dollar, five dollars, a gift certificate or something like that... but still something none the less, and better than being badgered into buying, oh, say, a subscription to a newspaper you already subscribe to. ;D

Really, the best way to handle any telemarketer is to politely ask them to remove your number from their calling list. If you ask, they are legally obligated to do so (in the US, at least...not sure about the telemarketing laws in Canada). But if you hang up on them, or just say "I'm not interested," your number is put back at the end of their queue and they'll call you again when your number rolls back around.
