Sam used Dean’s walkman all the time before he went to school and left off being a Winchester. Dean wished he could be surprised that Sam thought the family business wasn’t good enough for him; Dad sure took it as a shocking turn of events. But really, Sam ditching the life has been a long time coming.
Dean turns the thing over in his hands, and tries to decide what it means that Sam left this particular relic behind. Technically it belongs to Dean, sure, but he hasn’t used it for years. Not since Sam decided he hated Dad’s music (and Dad, too) and realized the headphones could make a barrier between himself and the world he was trapped in. Dean only knows the flattened bass of Sam’s music, the few notes that leaked out into their shared hotel room unintentionally. Which is maybe the point- he’s allowed to listen now. The machine’s an invitation to plug into the sound of Normal, CA, and drown out the thrumming of the highway.
Dean pops the case open and pulls out the mix Sam was listening to last. Coldplay, whatever that means. He flips the tape over, weighs it in his palm, waits to be nostalgic or pissed or anything. He isn’t. So he unwinds all the insides into a tangled mess. Lets the ruined thing slide from his hand into a pile of other tapes, which he will eventually dump in the trash. Then he takes the machine itself and starts methodically disassembling all the circuits inside, because unlike Sam he doesn’t need any music but the kind his father plays, and they’ve been going wanting for an EMF detector.
