Knocking on Heaven's Door

Here be a nonsensical and rambling list of things that were awesome about last night's ep. because it was made of awesome <3

Awesome things before the title card: Dean waking up because he couldn't feel his gun; Dean's nonchalance about death threats in the morning; WHEN he comes back he's gonna be pissed; The way the gunshot snaps perfectly to the gory "Supernatural" screen!

Awesome things after the title card: The music!  The hilarity of the fact that Cas and Sam have now inhabited the Impala!  Wee!Sam and Dean hugging and smiling, augh, i miss that!!!  The idea that Dean's heaven is his brother being happy <3

Lol @ Cas saying "Condolences,"  and "Don't go into the light."   Aww @ both brothers being sure they shouldn't be in heaven but equally sure that the other does deserve it, and also at Dean looking super happy when his mom pats his head.  Ouch @ Sam's heaven being "one of the worst nights of [Dean's] life."

Fun character insights:  The way John's mariage was made perfect by Mary's death is like how Sam became someone to brag about after he left.  Sam seeing that Dean's always held the family together, and trying to explain how he's with Dean even though he doesn't think of family in the same way; to me, that was him saying that he likes Dean for Dean, regardless of their blood connection.  That's a happier reading, anyways, than "Sam could take or leave his brother."  Surprised there was no Jess, but I'm betting it was a casting thing.

Back to the awesome things!  Wrestler Ash!  In the roadhouse! Hacking heaven!! Because he's fluent in Enochian!!  Also, "Winchesterland" being represented by him putting his dukes up.  Sam and Dean officially being soulmates.   "You boys die more than anyone I've ever met," and "windexed" brains.  That little twitch of Dean's lip when remembering Jo and Ellen dying.  Paaammellaaa <3  Ash throwing horns and an "I'm cool with it" in response to getting killed for the Winchesters. Dean rejecting happiness if it's not authentic reality, the way he's constantly all for Truth and Goodness, no matter how nice the lies might be.  The matrix reference.  Pam getting a kiss, and that it's "just like [she] imagined."  And Dean winks at her, lol

Awesome(ly disturbing) things:  Evil mommy, Zach molesting evil mommy.  Zach in general. The way he spits "petty" was perfect. Wonder if he's gonna be S6 big bad?  That would be cool (but unlikely).

Back to just-plain-awesome again!  Sam getting angry and wincing on Dean's behalf, the fact that their idea of heaven's center is the Cleveland botanical gardens.  The implication that God already gave TFW all the tools they need to win- just the three of them being alive is enough intervention.  I want them to figure out saving the world sans heavenly aid. Dean needs faith in himself, not in paternal figures, and maybe he can get to that mindset now.  Muddle through indeed.  *grabs pom-poms*  F-R-E-E W-I-L-L, what does that spell!?  Free will!  Goooooo TEAM!!  Woo, yeah! *high-kicks*

Eh hem.  Final, painful awesomeness: Cas looking wrecked. The way he's talking to god and then just... stops. That he doesn't even want the "useless" amulet. AND NEITHER DOES DEAN, AUGH.  Sam's face!  The sigh! Everyone needs a hug!!

A quick and (minimally) more analytical thought: I think that much of the negativity in the brothers' relationship in later seasons is due to Sam's not managing to Save Dean; in S3 Dean was willing to step away from his role as martyr and guardian (in other words, to actually let Sam be his equal) but then in S4 when Sam doesn't save him, he snaps back into controlling big brother mode.  And Sam is already wrecked and guilty that he failed, no matter how impossible the task, so he lashes back by downplaying Dean's strengths, as if he can make himself an equal partner by tearing down his brother, using any means to become stronger...  So maybe this season is Sam's chance to be the hero, to Save Dean like he promised, to overcome his guilt and show Dean that he can be relied upon to protect love him.  And then they'll be equal partners for realsies and they'll trust each-other again and not have so much angst about who's going to leave who and...yeah, that's not going to happen, is it?  *sigh.*

IN CONCLUSION.  I hope that they see into Walt and Roy again.  Not to kill them, just to bump into them on a case and be all "oh hai, 'sup? being dead doesn't stick on us, fyi."  Cue Walt and Roy looking horrified and Sam and Dean loping off into the sunset.

ep. review, squee!, spn
