    Transportation systems seem to do particularly poorly in corporate hands.

    Yeah.

    I think you could make that statement about any public service. Greed and the common good simply do not get along.

    Depends on how we define 'public service.' Private schools seem to do pretty well. I think the problem lies primarily in areas where monopolies essentially exist--and transportation is definitely a good example of that.
