Yeah, but you can't actually eat an entire serving of those things, even when you're really, really hungry... So it really makes two meals, and then the calorie count isn't as significant. At least, that's been my experience with the things.
That's just it. Everyone says that (I did as well, even as I gained 65 lbs in 2 years), but you can't gauge how much a proper portion is when it's all sprawled out on your plate.
It's a bit like topping up a bathtub with gourmet dog food and letting the dog decide for himself how much is good for him. Even if his stomach tells him its full, he may not listen to it when faced with so much delicious food.
Most Americans don't realise our own food industry is poisoning us. Few of us have time to fix real meals, so we rely on fast food and restaurants to feed us proper nutrition. Their own incentives are exclusively in making tasty food (to ensure return business). So they give us sugar and grease at the expense of everything else.
Until last year, I didn't know it was possible to be both obese and malnourished at the same time. But most of the poor kids I knew back in Orange County were both.
I'm well familiar with all of the studies on the fact that people eat more if presented with more, the effect of plate size and serving size, etc.
I think that personally, as a child, the amount I could eat in a single sitting was so different from those around me that I learned to override the instinct to eat more than I actually wanted. (Of course, generally, I wanted to go out and play, so I guess eating less contributed to that!)
I also often feel slightly ill after eating food like that, so that's another reason it's never personally been a big problem.
That all aside... I don't want two meals when I just ordered one. I want one meal. And those things, if I recall, are supposed to be an appetizer. Now, personally, I've been eating appetizers as my entrees for over a decade, but I imagine that most people think of appetizers as not-meals, but things you eat before you eat your meals
