Fuck.
I’m very, very angry right now. So I get to work 15 minutes early to make sure that everything is going to go okay, and it turns out that the foreman has locked the site down and buggered off sometime earlier than 15 minutes ago. And, seeing as G4S hasn’t even licensed me yet, let alone given me a key, I’m sealed outside. Called the office, and they don’t have any extra keys, even though they’ve been talking about how they are going to be getting me a set for about 2 weeks now. Okay, fine, I can deal with that. Nature, being the tremendous bitch that she is, has decided that today is going to be the first cold day of the month. Alright, fair enough. Karma for not bringing anything warmer than a summer uniform.
Around 8:00, after a few hours wandering the grounds, I decide to take shelter in the car to warm up. It is at this point of the story that I stop blaming outside forces for my hideous shift. I decided to fire up the radio, and I have it running for too long, I guess. Battery dies. Well, fuck. I called the office to see if the mobile had jumper cables… no dice. Looks like I need to wait for midnight to see if the guy relieving me has any cables. It’s at this point as well that the battery on my GBA dies.
So, fast forward four hours spent wandering the grounds and trying to read by the light of passing cars. Shift is over, relief guy pops up (who is also named Chris…). As is my luck, he doesn’t have any jumper cables either. I decide to try the car again, as 4 hours without being touched might have given it enough juice to turn over. Either that or the forces of the universe might have overheard my frantic prayers. Well, it doesn’t work, so I get a ride with Chris back home, to get our jumper cables.
And what do you know, the rest of my family took them on vacation with them! So now, I need to get up around 7:00am and start knocking on doors to find someone to give me a boost, or, failing that, call a tow-truck. Seeing as I’m working more or less straight from 2:00pm to 8:00am (both jobs like that I work on Saturdays, apparently), it’s going to be even worse than I initially thought. And to top it off, I forgot my backpack of stuff in the car and I’m not going to walk an hour back to the site to pick it up again.
I need a hug. Or a nice, strong drink.
