The really depressing thing is that the debate between the two major political parties seems not to be about whether this is a terrible thing but instead about who thought of it first.

They're just punting these ideas to provide a talking point, gauge public opinion and rattle the Tories. They have no intention of trying to introduce such draconian measures, imo, but might do a bit of ineffectual tinkering with the system once all the obfuscatory hoo-ha has died down. That seems to be how politics works these days.

The Daily Mail has a massive readership, particularly amongst women. Or maybe they're wooing The Sun, again...
