aw. nice of you to give the cat some acknowledgment and company in its last moments. Makes me think of a garter snake I accidentally caught in a manual push mower one time. (the reason why ever after I have stomped out yards I am about to mow even if I don't expect to find sticks or other dangerous things). The snake's neck got caught by the blade and there was clearly nothing I could do for it (save possibly speed it on its way, but that wasn't necessary). Instead I took it out of the mower, made it as comfortable as I could, apologized profusely, and sat with it until it died about a minute later.

I think animals can sense those sorts of things. Don't know if it really makes them feel better, but it seems worth doing anyway.
