Heat wave

Jul 26, 2016 22:37

The past few days we've had full-on summer, with temperatures that are nigh on to unbearable. Today was the third day of high 20s Celsius (low 80s Fahrenheit), and I think all of us feel on the verge of expiring from it. Many of you reading this might scoff at what we consider "hot" (and truth be told, I'd have scoffed myself once upon a time), but ( Read more... )

I hear you loud and clear. It's been relentless blue skies and hot here as well. And yes, I come from a place that has a similar climate to California and they scoff at my idea of "hot" these days.

But one thing people forget is that there are many, many more hours of sunlight here (more so for you) and that persistent sunshine is a pain. The midnight sun is more of a problem for me than the winter darkness, which surprises people.

We had a mighty thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, but all that did was raise the humidity, so it feels like a sauna here instead of an oven :)

The weather does look a bit more promising next week, but a bit sauna-ish for the rest of this week. I hope it's better in Stockholm for you - at the very least, it might get darker a bit earlier.

I really do believe the difference comes in there not being enough hours of darkness for things to cool off significantly. Plus the buildings just weren't designed for those conditions. I think about Farmor's apartment, for example, which is horrible in the heat. The windows are all on the same side and face southwest so it gets the sun at the worst part of the day and there's zero cross breeze. And the windows themselves are poorly designed to take advantage of a breeze if there was one to catch. It's very toasty in the winter but there's no relief to be found in the summer.

We, too, have had very high temps recently, for this area of the country. In the 90s every day, no rain. Everything is brown and dying if it isn't watered. I can't imagine living 2 hours from the Arctic Circle and having those temps in a house without air conditioning....hope the heat wave is soon over for you!
