I'm sitting at my desk eating my lunch (I know..."loser") and typing in my first journal entry. Always thought a journal would be cool but didn't know what to write...I guess time will tell!

What a cool LJ SN of blue_eyed_swede! Are you really Swedish? If so, I didn't know that! My niece married a man from Norway about 7 years ago and she learned to speak Norwegian as an adult. They've lived there for most of their marriage, but are now in the States for a year or two. I speak some Norwegian now myself. (I pick up languages pretty easy, it's kind of a gift). Anyways, you known Norwegian, Swedish, Danes....they're all Vikings! And Sweden ruled over Norwary for a long time.
Anyways, I adore your user picture....real pretty.

Anna, Most of my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents were from Sweden (or Denmark). My great-grandpa Yogi pretty much only spoke Swedish. I never met him though. We had a family friend that got the newspaper in Swedish when I was little and I remember him teaching me how to read it but I don't remember any of it. I would love to learn Swedish now and there are soooooo many Swedes in this area that we have a Day of Culture once a month at the local community college where you can learn all sorts of Swedish skills, including the language. I signed up a couple of weekends ago at our local Scandanavian Festival. They had a viking village set up and you could learn old crafts and games. Really really cool! You'll have to teach me the Norwegian that you know! Pam

Gee Pam, I'm jealous! I wish we had such great cultural events happening here in Vegas (LOL). Most of the culture is is fake, created for tourism. We do have a small Chinatown and some Mexican culture (but it's not like the Spanish Mission and Mexican culture I grew up with in San Diego) but they do have some Mexican celebrations here. But besides the Chinese and Mexicans theres not much else going on here. I think in the city of North Las Vegas there is a German club and one German restruarant that I've always wanted to go check out. (I'm a mixture like most Amercians: Irish, English, German, Welsh, and Scottish). But the most recent immigrants were from Ireland and Germany. The rest of my family has been in the States at least since the 1700's and many were here in the 1600's including Mayflower Pilgrim Edward Doty. But I've been able to appreciate the Norwegian culture and history (and the Vikings) through my niece and her husband and their daughter. It's always interesting to learn about new cultures I think
