Hmm...i would have to say that i agree with both of you. I believe that literature was made for its beauty and for people to read and recognize the true beauty of things. Yet i also think that that also depends on the poem or peice of literature that your reading. Maybe the writer wanted the reader to be drawn in and think about his analogies. But yea maybe they just want you to enjoy somethings we dont recognize ourselves.

as a college english major i went into the program with pretty much the same thoughts that you have now. however, after spending a semster in a fabulous poetry class, i don't feel that by analyzing a work of literature you destroy it. in fact i think just the opposite is true. if the work is good enough than it can withstand being analyzed and yet still hold on to the beauty that made it so appealing in the first place. only weak writings crumble after analysis, but if the work is up to par than it will remain beautiful, analyzed or not. you can discover so much about a person or a time period or a work of art just by giving it some extra thought. so in conclusion...analyzing is good, but if the work looks like shit after you analyzed it than it wasn't worth your time in the first place.

When I'm not Bull shitting a writting assignment. I make sure what ever i write comes from my mind. When i go back over in my second draft i make it unique(beautiful). I think its hard to analyze poems because no matter how hard you pluck at it or pick it apport there will always be someone who thinks differently then you do especially biased teachers like the one i have MWF of the week until the end of this semester.

When you write, if you're a true writer, you write what comes to mind and you don't care if others get it or not. Not everything in the world needs to be analyzed like crazy. The world was not made for that. People choose to scrutinize things. So, yea, I agree with you. Teachers take everything too seriously.
