28 Confessions of a GameStop Shift Supervior

If you buy video games, you should read this blog post I found. I had thought of writing up my own before, but this one hits nearly every point I would have put into it and it's fairly well written. I know most of my friends have probably heard from me about some of this stuff before, but it's definitely worth reading and though I work for a ( Read more... )

I've honestly never committed any of the problems mentioned in the link (well, that's also because I don't buy a lot of games), but it seems like people don't have common courtesy to understand why things are the way they are in those stores. Gutted cases are for security reasons and I only had a disc check with a used copy of Xenosaga II because the case was in a bit of a bad shape (why they took it, I don't know). But hey, can't it be easily assumed that those who work in a video game store wouldn't want to screw the customer over by giving them a scratched disc? Because that's the kind of thing that would piss them off too. The best analogy I can think of is that someone in an animal shelter wouldn't give you a sick puppy.

Good to know some people out there consider this common sense. I see so much of it every day I work that I've come to believe that it's just beyond all that or something. Thanks, you've given me hope. ^_^

Good post.

I remember Kenny working at EB and always worried about pre-orders and card sales because in the end that's all he was worth. Kept him on his toes a lot.

Though I do question the bit on trade-in policy. The trade-in value for Forza 2 is ten dollars. The trade-in value for Gears of War is 7 dollars. If they're -never- going to sell, maybe the problem isn't that the games are old. Maybe the problem is they take these two used titles from me for chicken scratch then turn around and try to sell them at 49.99.

The disparity between what the consumer is paid for a trade-in and how much its then re-sold for is the problem. If they sold those two used for twenty-thirty dollars people would pay it because well, shit, look at the cost of OTHER games on the system.

Yeah, it can be tough working at a video game store sometimes. I completely agree on trade in prices, they're very unfair. Though I think the drop in Forza is due to it being included in the bundle pack this winter. Still, it'll sell, so it should get more than that. As for Gears, no way it should trade in for $7, that's just ridiculous.

There should be an unofficial day to honor hardworking, amiable retail workers of all stores.

Though an official day would rock. One where we get a day off but still get hours for that day. Man... that would be amazing. Almost getting teary eyed just thinking about it.
