Quinceanera was an independent movie about a young Hispanic girl who gets pregnant, but was a virgin.
Also, Rabbit Proof Fence wasn't based in America, but it was delicious. It was about Aborigine children in Australia who were mixed and would get snatched up by the government and they would be integrated

I liked "Quinceanera" and "Rabbit Proof Fence" was great, too. You get extra points for long comments. ;) 10-second attention spans is about right when you look at most of the stuff that's coming out in the mainstream - at least out of this country. I'm a huge film fan and probably watch like 200 a year {and hardly any TV anymore}. About 80% of what I watch is foreign nowadays.
I think most of the newer US movies on it are just about Mexicans/Latinos. Makes sense as it's the main group arriving at the moment but still, there should be more and they should go mainstream! I've seen a few involving Asian immigrants but I know you already know most of those.
I remember that old movie "Green Card" from 1990 with (French) Gerard Depardieu.
"Heaven and Earth" is another - from 1993. Phung Le Ly, daughter of a farmer in Vietnam, gets imprisoned and terrorized during the war. After her escape to Saigon, she's left pregnant by her wealthy employer. Sgt. Steve Butler, an American soldier, romantically pursues and marries her. The new family moves to San Diego, where Le Ly refuses to accept her new fate as a housewife.
I know you've seen Mississippi Masala - 1992, I looooooooove that movie!!! Love story between the daughter of an Indian-African immigrant and a young African-American businessman, which deals with intercultural conflicts, personal independence and coming to terms with the past.
Ohhhhhh, thanks for these and the link! I've seen "Green Card" {just okay?}, "Mississippi Masala" {GREAT movie!!} and "The Wedding Banquet" {loved that, too}. I'll definitely check out the other 2.

because americans
a.) hate immigrants and would like to get rid off all of them anyway (because america and immigrants is SUCH a huge contradiction *raises eyebrow*)
and b.) because they rather pretend they don't exist and live in their all the same happy endings and action movies world.
