Having moved here from Europe as well, I know exactly what you're talking about when you say "grotesque shapes". It's S T R I K I N G when you first arrive in the United States.

Not only are people overweight - I can claim that for myself and have struggled with it all my life - but what you see is what people in other parts of the world call "American-style fat". The shape does not even match the frame and literally seems blown out of porportion. Like a balloon in place of a torso or ass with legs so small that it seems impossible they can support such a body. You do not see this anywhere else in the world, and if you do, it's basically Sumo wrestler types and people with actual health issues that cause odd weight gain in odd places. I wonder if you are right. The causes may lie in something that goes beyond the obvious. PS- I have gained weight too since I arrived here.

Precisely! Amerikanisch fett is the line you keep hearing over in Europe - of course people would have to have *been* places to even realize how odd it really is over here.
