student manifesto

I just wanted to take the opportunity to clear some things up for many of you who read this.

I'm sorry if you were offended by our announcement today about picture taking in Quebec. There was no alterior motive to our speech, we just don't want you taking pictures of yourselves in your "skivvies" on a class trip for a variety of good reasons. I'm perfectly aware that if you're hell-bent on doing it anyway, you could and I would probably never find out about it. That's why we're asking you not to and hoping that you make the right choices.

I enjoy communicating with many of you on LJ. I've had fun learning how to customize my own format and learning more good stuff about you all through reading what you write. However, I'm still a teacher online and at school, and though the boundary here may seem somewhat different, I still have your best interests at heart and I can't be on the same level with respect to privacy as you are. Personal things that you choose to share about your lives will remain confidential with me.

If you feel that you'd rather not have me reading your postings, you can remove me from your list or simply ask me not to. No hard feelings. I am happy to keep anyone on my list so you can read my postings, provided that you respect my no-swearing policy and don't post rude things anonymously.

When we have our internet meeting with parents (middle AND upper school) it will be about many internet topics, blogs being only one of them. We will NOT be showing anyone's journal or giving specific examples, as that would be a gross invasion of your privacy. This forum has been a long time coming, and is not the result of our "discovery" that many of you keep journals. Obviously, we aren't against journals and sharing information amongst friends, you safety online is our only concern. This will be made clear to all the people in attendance.

I'm sorry if anyone continues to be offended by our suggestions that you be careful about what you post on the internet. I'm touched that many of you trust me enough to let me be a part of your lives outside of school. I just want everyone to be safe.

~Ms. N
