Recently, I've seen several blogs, most recently this one, claim that the forgery of CBS's memos will cost Kerry the election. I tend to think that's premature. Even if a Democrat forged the memos and intentionally sent them to CBS, I think Kerry can get out of it. Bush has managed to completely avoid any fallout from the Swift Boat attack ads ( Read more... )

I seriously doubt any Democrats would have created fake memos. If anyone did it, they would have to be Republicans who were all too aware of how the media has been searching for some solid proof to back up the fairly obvious fact that Bush got preferential treatment. After all, it would take a completely idiotic Kerry supporter to not think that the Bush camp would have jumped over any and all errors with the documents the second the report came out.

At the point, the thing that's going to matter most in the elections is voter turnout. Whoever can get more of their troops rallied will be the one to walk away president. Right now Bush is ahead in the swing-state polls, but that's only among likely voters. There's a lot of strong democratic support among groups (students, minorities) that are not considered "likely voters."

Hrm... Reading that posting was interesting, but a little annoying. Bloggers can tend to be pretty full of themselves when it comes to their effect on the world around them. It's kind of like the Kuro5hin effect. A lot of the people who read and post on K5 believe that they're taking part in the next wave of journalism, changing the world and the way people receive information. The problem is, the only people who are even reading those things are the small group of people (less than 10,000) who are members of the site. For example, I personally stopped visiting K5 regularly (two or three years ago), I have yet to come across a single article from or link to that site, despite still doing plenty of political reading.

No, the next wave of media isn't bloggers. That pool may be vast, but it's very, very shallow. The next wave belongs to new media sites like Salon or *shudder* Drudge Report.
