that REM track with William S. Burroughs kicks ass.

pity that Michael Stipe/Rain Phoenix's Happiness isn't on the bonus disc, even though its not actually REM, its a bit of an oddity.

i understand why shiny happy ppl aint on the 1st disc, but where's its the end of the world... ?

Happiness is more of a Stipe solo piece rather than an R.E.M. collaboration. I.T.E.O.T.W.A.W.K.I. is absent from the mix for a good reason - it's not indicative of their finest work... this album is a best of chosen by the band as a reflection of what has passed during their time together.

William S. Burroughs somewhat unnerves me singing the lines "We used to be on fire..." and "...fuck me kitten"... it's wrong in a very novel way, but has turned a sexy Stipe moment into a creepy rendition of old man lust gone wrong.

I'll be happier in a few weeks when the DVD arrives... old MTV unfriendly R.E.M. videos...
