A Minor(?) Distraction

May 30, 2017 21:37

This morning I started a long fic, reading for a bit after breakfast on my laptop. Then I got dressed and went in town to get my allergy shots. After my shots I'm supposed to wait in the office for 20 minutes so I found the fic via phone, found where I'd left off, and read some more. Then I left to go make my hair appointment, which I running a bit early for, so I read in the car for about 15 minutes (having set a timer because I'm not new). Made it to my appointment, talked about garden/weather/et al and broke my phone back out as soon as I was under the dryer. After having my reading interrupted for hair washing and trimming, I paid, scheduled my next appointment, and headed north to Costco. There I requested a refill of one of River's arthritis meds at the pharmacy, picked up the three other things I needed, then parked myself in the pharmacy waiting area with the fic again. Surfaced to an amused pharmacy tech saying my name, possibly not for the first time, and attempting to get my attention from 2 feet away. Ah, yes.

Paid at pharmacy, paid at front checkout (the lines were short, I didn't even have time to unlock my phone), left Costco, drove to second pharmacy to pick up one of my prescriptions while pondering how unfair it is reading and driving are not compatible activities. Yes, that's what podfic is for, but I was in the middle of the printed version. Stopped for lunch at Chipotle's, which I ate while reading. Left there realizing I hadn't actually been paying the least bit of attention to eating and had to do a status check. No stomach ache so there was probably adequate chewing involved. Drove to the regular grocery store for a few more items and while I was thinking about the fic at a stoplight, I looked over and realized I'd already passed the entrance to said store. I sighed, turned at the next intersection, and made my way in from the opposite direction. While entering the store, I reminded myself that reading fic and grocery shopping are also not compatible activities, albeit less dangerous than reading and driving. Picked up apples, cheese, Gatorade, and peanut butter. Put the apples back because we're going south the day after tomorrow and I do not have time to make applesauce, wtf self. Checked out - had to wait, but only 2 people deep and it was the self-checkout so I just thought mournfully of my phone for few minutes.

Drove home, let dogs out, put cold groceries away, added spices and vegetables and mushroom stalks to the beef bones I'd had simmering on the stove since yesterday, read while supervising that coming back up to a simmer and concluding allergies and what not meant I really, really needed a nap. Curled up on the couch with my phone and read for another hour. Finally gave in and kind of collapsed sideways onto a disgruntled River. Slept long enough I'm gonna be up late, but woke up to stumble around, get dinner for me and the pups, and read while eating. Eventually broke off reading to rough strain the stock and start letting it reduce a bit. Read some more. Managed to to sample the stock 3 times, do a final strain, and get it into a couple of quart jars all without smudging my phone or leaving it unduly beef scented despite being on the last chapter. At this point I looked at my phone (sitting nearby in a place of marginal safety), looked at the dishes, picked up said phone, and retreated to couch to finish the fic.

So that was my day. It's not that I didn't get anything accomplished but there were other things that I should have done that, uh, obviously didn't happen. Alas. At least there's still tomorrow to get them done before we leave on Thursday? As long as I don't start a long fic first thing in the morning anyway.

The short version of all the above is this: I found the following fic very absorbing and highly recommend it. :D
