Pain

So, question: when you do cardio - running, dancing, whatever causes you to breathe heavily - for longer than your body's used to, do you get a horrible pain in the back of your throat?  As if you're in the middle of a bad cold, or something ( Read more... )

If you've been running outside lately, I would attribute it to the colder weather. My throat feels kind of raw if I run outside if it's less than like 60 degrees sometimes. I wouldn't call it "extreme pain," but it can hurt a bit, especially if you're breathing extremely heavily.

If you're breathing really heavily you might try slowing the run down a little bit...it may help?

That's true, it may have something to do with the cold. Still, it's definitely beyond hurting "a bit" or being "kind of raw."

I do start walking when my breathing gets heavy, and it does help some.

Hmm..Not to delve into personal medical stuff on LJ, but you might want to get tested for asthma, too, just in case. My understanding is that the symptoms can be slightly different for different people.

I'd be very, very surprised if it was asthma. I don't have trouble breathing, it's just that it hurts like a bitch.

Sometimes I cough a little, but nothing like what you're describing.

Okay, maybe I should go see an ENT doctor about this.

Actually, this has totally happened to me. I've noticed it after I start running after a veeeery long period of not-running (and usually when my return to running isn't carefully paced).

That sounds sorta familiar, although I don't think I get the pain quite as bad as you're talking about, and usually it doesn't lead to me feeling like coughing. Although occasionally it does. Mostly this happens when I'm running in cold weather ( < 65 degrees), somewhat dehydrated, and unusually out of shape.
