I find that often, when I express an opinion, someone will argue with me by essentially saying that other people disagree with me. This tends to happen most during policy discussions. "I think we should do X." "Well good luck - A, B, and C all disagree with you

Now, if you personally want to believe B instead of, say, me, because you consider B more authoritative, that's fine. However, if you want to convince me that B is right, you will have to make some sort of persuasive argument instead of just saying "B is more authoritative than you." Unless I am also an admirer of B, of course.
But that's not at all the argument I'm complaining about. The argument I find so annoying is that B disagrees with me. As in, "I know you think gay marriage is keen, but Pat Buchanan disagrees with you." Or "I know you think we should transition to sustainable energy sources, but BP doesn't." And they say that as if it's supposed to be a counter-argument.
