"So, after I finished my undergraduate degree, I took a year off to …"
Kelli stifled a yawn behind her napkin, and contemplated if she would be able to live it down if she took a dive headfirst into her soup bowl.
She nodded, and leaned her head against her hand, which proved to not be the smartest idea she had, seeing as how it just made her want to nod off.
God, she hated blind dates. Kelli wondered where on earth her friend Marianne had found this dud.
Kelli had known almost immediately this date was going to be a disaster.
John - honestly, could you have a more boring name than John? - worked in Advertising, but his personality really did not make her want to buy anything from him. She was not even sure what company he was representing now, seeing as how she had tuned him out right around the time he started listing all the first year courses he took in university.
Kelli's bullshit radar went on high alert after John started listing all the top Ivy League schools that he claimed wanted him. She did not care if John's abilities were actually worthy of an Ivy League degree, but there was no possible way every school handed out full scholarships like they were candy.
She heard her phone beep, and feigned her resistance to answer it.
"Oh, it's okay if you answer that," John said, "it may be an emergency."
Kelli glanced at the screen. It was a text message from Marianne.
How goes it?
Save me! Kelli replied, before offering John a diplomatic smile. "I'll just be a moment."
That bad huh?
Kelli stifled a laugh, before she sent out one more SOS text.
See you in ten!
Kelli looked up to John, and gave him a look she knew was worthy of an Oscar, and hastily gathered up her purse and shoved her phone away in the pocket.
"I'm so sorry, John! It's an emergency. Maybe we can reschedule?"
John nodded, before he handed Kelli his business card. "Call me," he said.
"Sure." Keep dreaming, buddy.
She tossed John's crumpled up card into the potted plant outside of the restaurant, before she headed towards the parking lot. She climbed into her car, and leaned her head against the steering wheel.
Why did she have such bad luck with blind dates?
