The best episodes are the ones that are dominated by Arthur and Merlin Yes! I was watching and suddenly this line you've always said popped up in my head. This ep certainly proves once again how true it is. Having said that, I admit though, that I don't think I can ever feel completely positive about any episode anymore. Fear of lack of continuity and of how it might go tumbling down the very next week will always be present from now on and certainly will affect my criticism. And here: He’s getting his Merlin Continuity Book out of his knapsack to check on how Arthur feels about magic in this point of the seriesLike you said, it happens again. What happens to 5.01 'can't trust the words of a sorcerer' speech? Still, for this instance I'll think of Arthur as being clouded by his grief here and behaving like proper grieving, fallible humans, if only to spare myself the frustration. Also, while I'm at it, I'll presume Uther wasn't going to kill Arthur, merely delivering some sort of ghostly teaching. It doesn't line up with his first

"Yes! I was watching and suddenly this line you've always said popped up in my head. This ep certainly proves once again how true it is" I probably do repeat myself far too often! I think, for me, as that is the core of the show and it's success, it's worth repeating. I'm a little bit like you too, I'm not sure how great the next episode will be. But at least we got a really great episode, in my opinion, within this season

In honour of the Labyrinth of Gedref references in this episode, I chose an icon with one of the most memorable scenes from that episode. ♥ I got the hand signs and them seeing a mouse/rat as references to LoG, but thanks for pointing out the scene where they drink the potions. I love when there are little references to old episodes especially to episodes in S1, a season I'm fond of...maybe mostly for nostalgia reasons, but still -- the OT4 days of Merlin/Arthur/Morgana/Gwen in S1 were golden.
LOL at the location, location, location line about Morgana. I wonder where she'll end up next too. Her choice of dwellings *is* concerning...but creepy castle was a step up a bit from her previous two homes (maybe because it's a castle, that counts for something, right?).
I enjoyed the Arthur and Merlin scenes in this episode too. The poetry thing is now on the list of my funniest Arthur/Merlin moments. *giggles* *high fives Merlin*
Merlin stops him by reminding him that it’s powerful magic. Poor Merlin looks so confused. He’s getting his

Your icon is my favourite scene ever. Not just for content, but for how it looked. It was just stunning and perfect. I loved the little LoG references. It did make me very nostalgic. I think we've had a few things happen since then which I grit my teeth together at, but we've also had a lot of good too. However, I do love that episode, so it was nice that it got such a blatant shout out.
Yeah, the Creepy Castle would have been a keeper once someone had run the hoover around and given it a lick of paint. Good luck to her trying to find a place where she can have pets.
Yeah, the 'Arthur's views on magic' slightly irked me a bit. Most of the rest of the episode was brilliant, so I will let it slide, but they need to tighten up that consistancy a bit.
I definitely like the idea of Merlin missing his own reveal somehow and being really befuddled over how everyone is reacting to him.
Brilliant, brilliant review! I liked it more than the ep itself. You had me laughing out loud more than once.
The ep had many, many good moments in it and incredible chemistry between Arthur & Uther as well as Arthur & Merlin. Mostly though, I was disappointed that something so heavy as the father-son relationship wasn't treated with the depth that it should have been. The whole felt a bit lacking for it.
I do wish however that Merlin the series could devote itself further to just the pairing of Merlin and Arthur. They are exactly as you say, the heart and core. Bradley says that too, come to think of it.
Aww, thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it.
I would have loved more depth on the father-son relationship, but then I would have no matter how much they had included in it. It's something that I've missed since Anthony left, although they haven't done a bad job of still having Uther's precence hanging over Arthur in a few episodes, I would have still liked it in more, as it's one of the most interesting dynamics and issues within the show.
Beeeee!!!! I love your review! I love how you look at the ep and Arthur! I just wish I could have seen all the stuff in it that you saw. I loved so much about it - mainly the fact Arthur and Merlin were let out to play - but the handling of Uther just disappointed me so much because I'd let myself get all hopeful when Id thought it had all been sucked out of me (pause for smutty aside). As you said Uther was always more than a panto baddie - but thats what this episode made him into and the thought that that was Arthurs last view of his father is ... :( No closure there. I was also stupidly hoping for closure between Uther and Merlin - that being dead would make him contemplate his choices rather than driving him off his head. :-p Plus this was Uther - originator of The Purge - but magic wasnt even raised as an issue

Also I totally hadn't seen the innuendo side to the spoon scene until you pointed it out, so thank you for that!

To be fair, there was quite a bit of innuendo being thrown around, so I can't blame you for missing some!
Thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad it's going on someone else's favourites list too!
