"I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello..."

So, this week it’s been announced that season five of Merlin will be the last. Frankly, everyone knew that. There had been rumours that it would be all summer and autumn, and although its best to take everything unconfirmed with a pinch of salt, these all seemed too accurate not to be true. It was pretty much confirmed. Also, we’ve all been hearing ( Read more... )

I think it’s a pretty universal opinion that the reveal needed a great aftermath. We need to see how it pulls Merlin and Arthur apart and how they join back together again. I just don’t understand why they wasted a whole season, when they could have been doing this? This is what we have been waiting five years for. I’m not saying I don’t find Merlin entertaining anyway, I do, but why fill the last season with episodes that don’t have a strong connecting narrative, when you could be creating an astounding one?

This, so much this. There does seem to be a wasted opportunity here.

Like you, I love the show, it is entertaining and I will miss it.

Maybe they'll give us a movie? I know that's being waaaay optimistic LOL.

I honestly don't know what to think of from this final season. I'm just gonna wait and see, try not to stress myself too much, and then go back and enjoy the wonderful anxiety-free slash-tastrophe of the earlier seasons. Care to join me?

At this point in time, I expect the magic reveal, if it ever happens, to take up no more than a few minutes time. Arthur will probably recognize Merlin has magic and then die. Let's not complicate things with difficult and complex emotions and such. That would give the ending way too much depth. :(

It's good to hear how many of us out there were waiting for the same things regarding Merlin, Arthur and Albion. Which proves that the writing of the show did indeed promise us all these things - it just doesn't deliver. I'll probably never understand why. Everyone who loves to tell stories should have jumped at the opportunity to deliver on all the wonderful prophecies and develop these characters more. But I guess there were other considerations on TPTB's minds. Or maybe they just lost interest. Season 5 certainly feels that way.

I second everything written in your post above. Through the story-telling we were promised these developments of character and setting - and now the show will be unable to deliver. It breaks my heart. I just hope the last 5 episodes will be really great and at least not leave a bad taste infecting my recollection of the whole series, that would be terrible indeed.
