Q: What do you call three planks of wood?

A: Edward Woodward.

RIP, Edward Woodward. I always thought you were decent, and a very handsome older actor. I wonder if you knew of this joke. It doesn't work if you have a Canadian or American accent and articulate all those pesky 'r' sounds.

Oh no - that's awful! And anyway, who's Laurence Olivier anyway? :P

I thought of another joke. Brace yourself.

Q: What do you call four planks of timber?

A: I don't know, but Edward Woodward would.

Nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk!! (It's OK to laugh at your own jokes in my little world.) And I realise I stuffed up the first one by asking about 'wood', not 'timber'. Or 'lumber' to you and your kind.

I dunno! Is it another version of Laurence Olivier's take on poor old Eddie's name? (Scroll up for the first comment.) Otherwise it sounds like a toddler, or just someone who can't say their 'd's. Or who's drunk. Or emulating an ambo's siren. Or....?

It took me ages to figure out this, and then I didn't after all, I read it in the comment thread following a Guardian blog obituary thing(blogituary? Ugh...).

Q: Why has Edward Woodward got so many Ds in his name?

A: Because if he had none he'd be Eee-wah Woo-war!

I'm still sure there's a better variation on the question part out there somewhere...
