At what point is a person alone? Is it when they are by themselves, or just when there is no one within 20 miles that they feel they can rely on?

I'd say that the first is "alone" and the second is "lonely". (They're separate states - alone is more of a physical lack of people, and lonely is more feeling a lack of emotional connection to anyone nearby.)

its not the definition I'm looking for. More, the way Socrates wanted to find virtue, I want to discover what it is to be alone. Almost metaphysicly.

from my experience, alone is being an overweight, nerdy, 13 year old girl in a private school as a new kid in a state away from any friends.

That's the most alone I've achieved, but in the negative sense. I enjoy being without people given the chance, nothing against the people (like when I have the house to myself! ^^)
