Click on start, then right-click on My computer. Then click on the hardware tab, then click on Device manager. Your D: will probably be under DVD/CD-Rom drivers. Drop that list down.
The first thing you should do is to see whether or not the icon has a little yellow exclamation point on it. Right click on it. If the bolded option says "Enable" then click on that and see if it solves your problem.
If not, click on "Update Driver..." and see what it does.
If all else fails, in that right-click menu click on "properties" and go through the troubleshoot options. Another thing you could do is google the error message you get.
Those are my thoughts, and what I would do had you brought your computer to me.
Oh; another thing may be that the version of the sims you got might be for Vista instead of XP (I'm pretty sure you have an XP machine, yes?) Try and look on the back. Though most software will be for the current OS and all those behind it, it's still good to make sure,
