Part Three

Jared is taking the first bite out of his burger when someone slides into the seat across from him.  It’s Chad and he’s wearing a ridiculously huge shit-eating grin.  “Way to go Romeo.” Chad says, although he actually says ‘Ro-may-yoooo’ and holds up his hand for a high five-which Jared doesn’t give him.

“What?! How the hell...”

“Because I’ve got connections.” Chad says whipping out his cell phone and waving it in Jared’s face.  “My people called your people and...”

“Chad!”

“Okay, grouchy....I’ve just seen Sandy taking a cigarette break and she told me about Jensen asking you out on a date.  She looked a little bummed too I think she might have had the hots for you.”

“No way.”

“You know when you don’t scrunch your face up in that frown you’re always wearing; you’re actually quite a good looking guy.”

Jared coughs as a mouthful of mashed up burger and dry bread sticks in the back of his throat. “Now I’m officially uncomfortable.”  Jared mutters as he leans across the table, “I thought I was the gay one.”

“You are.” Chad smiles as he licks a finger and starts smoothing out his eyebrows.  “That’s exactly why I let you hang out with me because this way, I don’t have any competition for the hot chicks.”

“And there I was thinking you liked me for me.”

“No I just put up with you for your gay perks.”

“Gay perks?!”

“Totally.” Chad grins and leans over to help himself to a handful of Jared’s fries.

Jensen calls Jared that same day to arrange their date.  He’d spent over an hour internally grappling over whether ringing so soon would appear over-eager but then, if he didn’t call, Jared might assume he’d changed his mind.  And Jensen wasn’t about to risk that happening.

When Jensen hangs up the phone, palms sweating and butterflies doing a series of extreme Evel Knievel stunts in his belly, he has a promise that Jared will meet him at Silver Cinemas on Emerson Street at eight o’clock.

Jensen’s there at seven thirty.  He stands and stares up and down the street, he rocks on his heels and studies his fingernails.  He smoothes out a stubborn crease on the front of his shirt and repeatedly checks out his hair in the reflection of the cinema’s wide glass panelled doors.  By the time Jared arrives-at precisely eight o’clock-Jensen is actually trying to shine his shoes by rubbing them up the back of his pant leg.

“Hey.”  Jared says with a smile.  His eyes run the length of Jensen’s body, top to toe, before settling on the ground and staying there.

“Hey, yourself.”  Jensen replies.  “You look nice.”  He adds and he means it.  Jared’s dressed in a pair of dark blue Diesel jeans which are tight in all the right places and a smart white shirt.  He’s still huddled inside the huge black coat which he always seems to wear but he looks good enough to eat.

Their moment of mutual admiration is followed by a period of awkward silence.  What with first date jitters and actually, finally, being together somewhere outside of the diner, Jensen doesn’t know whether to shake Jared’s hand or hug him or...Jensen stops thinking as Jared leans forward and kisses him on the lips.  It’s chaste and brief and Jared’s pulling away before Jensen even got the chance to taste him.

Jensen reaches up a hand and grips the back of Jared’s neck, stroking the fine hairs there.  “Can we try that again?”  Jensen asks and he grips Jared’s coat, pulls Jared towards him hard.  They kiss again.  Longer this time, messily, with clashing teeth and a bout of giggles which comes out of nowhere and leaves them both pulling apart still laughing breathlessly.

Jared’s cheeks are flushed pink and Jensen looks away to try and pull himself together.  Not to mention the fact that he really needs to stop thinking the hardcore thoughts which are running through his head right now.

There’s a decent selection of movies advertised on the placard above the cinema entrance but Jensen couldn’t care less about what film they end up going to see because how can he possibly be expected to concentrate with Jared sitting so close beside him?

“You wanna choose?”  Jensen asks.

“Can we forget the movie?” Jared says suddenly, eyes watching a noisy group of young men laughing and shoving at each-other as they go into the cinema.  “Can we maybe take a walk instead?”

Jared had been nervous about the date.  It had taken him a good two hours to get ready.

Chad had finally pushed him out the door.  The walk to the theatre had provided Jared with time to collect himself, but once he spotted Jensen, his breath had caught in his throat.

The man looked amazing.  He was everything Jared had dreamed about in a partner.  Jensen was beautiful which was great but it was the eyes that had drawn Jared to him.

The man had caring eyes.  As the saying goes, our eyes are the windows to our souls, and that was proving true when it came to Jensen.

The green eyed beauty had been nothing but sweet and kind to Jared.

Passing out at the diner had been humiliating but it had shown Jared the caring side of Jensen.  This guy had witnessed Jared at one of his weakest moments and hadn’t judged him.  In fact, after witnessing Jared in full panic mood, he had asked him out.

So yeah the eyes hadn’t lied and now Jared was lost in them.

As he approached, he found all that he could say was.  “Hey.”

Which was matched with “Hey yourself” and “You look nice.”

The silence that followed made Jared a bit nervous.  Chad had told him not to over think things, to do what came natural.   Jared found himself wanting to kiss Jensen so acting on Chad’s advice, he went for it.

His bravery died during the execution of the kiss and he pulled back before the kiss could be anything more than just friendly.

Jared was happily surprised when Jensen took things a bit further.

“Can we try that again?”  Was asked before Jensen moved into plunder his mouth, not that Jared was complaining.  The kiss was wonderful.  It was messy and sloppy but it had left Jared breathless.

Jared had been brought out of the ecstasy of the kiss, when a rowdy group of teens passed them.  Jared tensed.  Crowds still made him nervous and the idea of being stuck in the movies with a group of belligerent teens was more than he could take.

Caught up in his panicky thoughts, Jared almost missed Jensen’s question.

“You wanna choose?”

Jared decided to not let himself panic and flee.  Taking a deep calming breath just as Dr. Morgan had taught him, Jared took the object of his fears out of the picture by changing the date.

“Can we forget the movie?”   Jared asked and was relieved when Jensen took him up on the suggestion.

“Sure.”  Had been the enthusiastic reply.

Jared felt his panic subsiding and excitement growing.

It is possibly the strangest date Jensen has ever been on but it is also the most romantic.  The two men stroll down to the ocean front while the sun paints the sky with pinks, reds and purples before hiding from view.  In its place a large full moon tinged with orange climbs to its glory.

Basking in the harvest moon, Jensen feels that he and Jared might be the last two people on earth.  It should be a disquieting thought, apocalyptic and scary, but the thought of being alone with Jared is comforting.

And exciting.

Jensen can’t get over how much Jared makes him feel.  Curious.  Concerned.  Content.

And lustful.

The orange light bounces off the water as it gently laps against the pier, lighting up Jared’s beautiful features.  His eyes, hazel one moment and pure green the next, are large and tip-tilted, which lends a feline air about his date.

On the walk down, Jensen had noticed the innate grace Jared moves with and it’s hard to reconcile with the big oaf who bumbled into the restaurant earlier that day.  Jensen is itching to know what has scarred the young man to such extremes, but he doesn’t want to break the mood.

Instead they speak quietly of family and friends and college and majors until the words dry up.

But the silence is friendly.  Relaxing even.

At least until Jared’s long, long leg brushes up against Jensen’s.  The touch is electric and after coralling the wild beating of his heart, Jensen does a mock stretch and yawn, letting his arm drape around the taller man’s shoulders.

Jared sinks down on the bench and let’s his head nestle against Jensen’s shoulder.

Jensen inhales and catches the clean scent that he associates with the brunette.  A shiver runs down his spine and he involuntarily squeezes Jared closer to his side.

When the younger man doesn’t pull away, Jensen reaches over with his free hand and tilts Jared’s chin up until he’s staring into the large cat-like eyes.  “What are you thinking about?”

A blush slowly spreads over Jared’s cheeks and it takes everything Jensen has not to lean over and kiss the younger man right then.  “How perfect you are.”

Jensen has no illusions as to how attractive he is - he’s been told more times than he cares to count how his full lips and freckles across the bridge of his pert nose are the perfect combination - but for once he gets the sense that Jared isn’t talking about physical perfection.

Jared senses his confusion and tries to clarify.  “You’re so good and kind.  Why me?”

He could tell Jared the truth - how Jared is a mystery to him and if he solves the mystery, he’ll probably be on his merry way because nothing ever seems to tie him down - but maybe this time is different.  Maybe Jared is the one he’s been searching for.

Jensen doesn’t have a right answer so he goes with his instincts.  Leaning down he slowly touches his full lips to Jared’s and tugs at his lower lips with his lips, worrying with gentle insistence.

It must have been the right answer because Jared is plastering himself completely against Jensen’s side and sighing.

Jensen didn’t even bat an eyelash when Jared asked if they could skip seeing a movie.  It took the pressure off of him and the tension in his neck and back decreased in slight increments until the two men were matching stride for stride as they followed the path to the water.

The sky was gorgeous as the sun said goodnight and before he knew it, the moon was replacing it.  A harvest moon, full and orange.

And romantic.

Okay, maybe the moon wasn’t romantic.  It’s just being next to Jensen.  Jensen who doesn’t treat him like a freak or pepper him with questions like it’s the inquisition.  It feels right.

The silences.

The small talk about home towns and families and school.

And the sitting next to each other on the bench.

Jared doesn’t want Jensen to kiss him again - the pressure of keeping his secret weighs on his mind - but if Jensen doesn’t kiss him again he thinks he’ll lose his mind.

Jensen stretches his arms up and yawns and Jared thinks it’s the prelude to the evening ending.  But then Jensen’s left arm drops over his shoulder and pulls him closer.

The date is perfect.  Jensen is perfect.

He slouches down the bench until his head pillows against Jensen’s shoulder.  Jensen’s breath tickles the top of his head and they simultaneously shiver.

Jensen gently grasps his chin and the urge to pull away, to run, is absent.  Instead Jared melts into the touch.  “What are you thinking about?”

His face heats up as he searches for a good response.  Jensen is staring deep into his eyes and all reason has fled.  “How perfect you are.”

He cringes in embarrassment.  It’s true but Jensen doesn’t need to know how pathetic he is.  How totally enthralled he is that someone wants to take the time to get to know him, ask him on a date.  Touch him.

Jensen is frowning and at first Jared thinks he’s blown it.  But no, Jensen seems to be willing him to answer.  “You’re so good and kind.  Why me?”

The frown eases and something else enters Jensen’s bright, almond shaped eyes.

Soft lips brush his own and then teeth are nibbling on his lower lip.  It’s the sexiest thing that’s ever happened to Jared and his eyes drift shut.

The pressure against his lips increases and he can’t withhold the sigh that trips from his lips.

Heaven.

His body is plastered against Jensen’s and he knows he’s being too forward but it feels so good.

And then Jensen is sliding his warm hand under the hem of his shirt and touching his abs.

His body tenses but Jensen mistakes his response and soon Jared finds himself sprawling on his back as his date’s body presses down upon him.

The hand travels higher.

Jared wrenches his mouth out from beneath Jensen’s and pushes at the lithe body atop him with all his strength.

He feels a moment of remorse as Jensen tumbles to the ground next to the bench but then Jared’s flight response has kicked in and he’s upright, his feet pounding against the path.

His breathing is loud in his own ears as forces himself down the path.

He needs to gain sanctuary.

Now.
