You're pretty crafty, if memory serves, have you thought about grabbing some supplies and building little trinkets to sell? The money of course wouldn't be rent money or anything but every little bit helps. Hell I've found fabric and yarn at goodwill for a few bucks and large dept stores that cut their own fabric usually have some bits left over for a low low price.
Yeah, I had various ideas back in high school about what I was going to make then sell then get rich off of on e-bay. First it was these pretty bitchin skulls out of sculpty, and they could be on hair clips, jewelry, etc. Then it was handbags out of upholstery fabric. I made about 3, but never got good enough at it to sell them.
One of the problems is that crafters price their stuff WAY too low, like barely enough to recoup material costs. Look around on Etsy. I could probably sell some of my hand made books. My final project is probably worth around 200, after materials and paying my self $10 an hour, but it wouldn't sell for that on Etsy or Ebay.
Anyways, sorry that was just sort of a side rant, didn't mean to shoot down helpful suggestions.
I'm probably going to have to be doing freelance graphic design work if I don't get a full time design job, just to keep up my portfolio.
