Pyroclastic flow = when a volcano sends a 450 mph, 1800°F ground-hugging blanket of hot gasses (and stuff) down the mountain. Lobster, anyone everyone?

I knew a volcano could choke, bury, or burn you with ash, landslides and lava. This explanation is new to me.

That's what's theorized to have killed the residents of Pompeii and Herculaneum, before they were buried by the ashfall.

Yes. Not all volcanic eruptions have them, but they are common. Today's Wiki meander started with me wanting to know more about Pompeii.
