a summary of the manga so far.
[character abilities]:
Well! Rin is the son of Satan. Of course, he didn't know that for the first fifteen years of his life due to everything being sealed into a sword, but once he drew that sword? It was goodbye to his human body and hello to a demonish type body. So! To represent the fact that he's a demon, he's got pointy ears, a very expressive black tufted demon tail, and pointy teeth. Before it was unsealed, he was still pretty damn strong, though. Like, way stronger than even a strong human could be.
ANYWAY, now that he's unsealed those demon powers, he's got a whole bunch of them-- the most obvious are his ability to use bright blue flames, although he doesn't have amazing control over them. He can use the flames both when the sword is sheathed and what it's not, the power just varies! When it's unsheathed, his ears will get longer and his power increases a lot. It's so powerful that he has a super hard time controlling his flames, and the longer the sword is out, the more likely he is to lose himself to the flames and become a violent berserker.
He's also got some incredibly healing abilities (he was able to heal from having his foot chopped off) due to his demon powers, and there's also the ability to communicate with demons! Kinda, at least. He understands Kuro, a cat demon and his familiar. And he's also currently attending an exorcist school so that he can become the best damn exorcist ever and take down Satan.
On the more normal side of things, Rin can fight a good fist fight (even if he gets hurt a lot) and he has a talent for cooking!
[character personality]:
Rin normally comes off as a typical delinquent, and unless you know his reasons behind what he does, he seems like one! He’s hotheaded, cocky, easily provoked, has a temper, and is quick to start a fight. A lot of the time, his reasons for starting a fight are purely good in that he was doing it to protect someone or something. Pick on birds and hurt them? You can bet Rin will fight for the birds. Pick on someone that can’t defend themselves? Rin will be there, ready to throw a punch for the person that can’t.
Like what I said above might imply, Rin is definitely far from a mature person. He sobs at emotional manga, he likes hot, sexy girls, and he’s quick to fight! He also likes to try to impress the girls that he sees! Usually. Mostly because he’s a derptastic teenager that’s kinda dense sometimes. He’s kinda dumb too-- definitely not booksmart or good with studying or just school in general, although he does make a point to at least try, even if it’s something he’s not good at. Also, like a lot of teenagers, Rin thinks he’s all grown up and he can do things on his own without help from his priest papa. Or, at least, he did until everything went down with Satan. He is very expressive, too-- it’s not hard to tell what emotion he’s feeling because he’s not one to hide that sort of thing. His face, his body language, and his tail all convey what kind of emotion he might be feeling at the time. Like, seriously, if he’s happy his tail will wag happily and all that kind of stuff. He's usually a pretty friendly guy, too, once one gets beyond the roughish exterior he has.
While he might seem somewhat tsundere about it at times, he cares very deeply about the people important to him, and he will do absolutely anything to keep them safe-- for example, when Yukio was bullied a lot when they were younger, he would get into fights to protect him! No one is allowed to mess with his brother. It’s the same with Shiemi, or just... anyone that he considers a friend! He also refuses to fight the people that he cares about. Rin might seem rough around the edges, yeah, but he has a heart of gold. He’s protective, like I mentioned above, and determined to do the right thing! He wants to use his demon abilities to protect people with kindness. Honestly, if it weren’t for his blue flames, it’d be pretty damn hard to tell he was a son of Satan in the first place. Also, while he may be the more confident twin, Rin is determined to catch up with and surpass Yukio!
When Rin has a goal in mind, there is absolutely nothing that will stop him from wanting to achieve it. He is determined to become an exorcist and take down Satan, and he’s not about to let anything stop him that easily. Sure, there’s the hurdle of people wanting to kill him because he’s the son of Satan, but that just makes him more determined than he was before. After the big reveal that he was the son of Satan, he begged for more help to control his flames-- he wants to get better so that he can both stay alive (since he will be executed if he toes the line too much) and... well, kick Satan’s ass!
While Rin doesn’t completely mind being a demon, there are a few things that bother him-- of course, he understands why, but it does bother him to see his friends in his exorcist class abandon him because he’s the son of Satan. When he was younger, he threw a fit over being called a demon behind his back-- he hated it, although Fujimoto Shiro, his priest papa, managed to get him to cool down and focus on becoming a better person that uses his strength for good things. And honestly, he is scared of what he can do when his sword is unsheathed, because he can lose himself! Which is why he’s training like he is, too. He doesn’t want to lose himself to the flames and become a berserker like he did that one time.
Oh yeah, as an example of him being kinda an idiot-- Rin’s idea of using his head is literally using his head to headbutt things. And as an example of him being a good guy, he befriended his familiar by simply just... being kind and wanting to resolve his differences with him, just like priest papa had done before him.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Chapter 22, just before he interferes with Ryuuji's family stuff.
[journal post]:
[When the communicator turns on, it’s initially very off-- the only thing that can be seen is a little bit of Rin’s head in the bottom corner of the screen. It takes a couple of seconds, but his head pops up pretty quickly. He looks pretty confused. And also absolutely soaked. He doesn’t realize it’s recording as a video, though, just... like it’s a phone thing.]
Whoa, uh. Hey, this works like a phone doesn’t it? Can anyone hear me? I’m not sure where I am, but I’m pretty sure this ain’t Kyoto-- there wasn’t anything in the guidebooks that said anything about a place that looks like this!
[A sigh, and then the video shakes a bunch for a couple of seconds until everything is dark. He pocketed it, so what he says next is kinda muffled.]
It’s probably not gonna work, huh. Phones only work if you’ve got another number or something!
[third person / log sample]:
Rin was having an epic staredown with the candles sitting in front of him. Why was it so hard to just light the wicks? He had to keep trying. He couldn’t have any melted candles, nothing could explode, not could burn down. He just had to figure out how to light those damn wicks. There were some things he wanted to do, and sure, he wanted to take the day off like the rest of the exwires had, but... he couldn’t do that! He knew he couldn’t, even if he wanted to, because there were a lot more important things that he had to do.
Like light these damn wicks.
Once he did that, he’d be able to do a lot of things! Shura said that this was important, so... even if he got frustrated (and man, Rin was frustrated), he wasn’t going to stop until he managed to do it. A break every now and then was probably a good idea, though-- he needed some time to cool off so that he could focus again. That’s why he was currently standing up and shoving his head under the water pouring from a faucet. The water was nice and cool, and... he felt like he was relaxing a bit just from doing that. He had to get back, but it couldn’t hurt to just stick his head under there for few minutes, could it?
Instead of his mind going blank like it sometimes does - he’s good at spacing out - he couldn’t help but think. It was nice being able to use his flames out in the open like this, kinda. It made it a lot easier to train, and he didn’t have to hide who he was anymore! But the way people acted around him bothered him. He understood why-- being the son of Satan was kind of a big deal! And not in the good way. That didn’t make it bother him any less, though, especially since the exwires were a pretty awesome team up until he had to take on that asshole Amaimon.
He was gonna find a way to make it better, though. He wanted to make up with them and he wanted to stay their friend. It would be difficult for some of them, but... they were worth it to him! Rin wanted them to stay safe, and they were part of the reason he wanted to get control over his flames. He didn’t want to be scared of them and he definitely didn’t want to lose himself again like he had. Rin had to admit that it was pretty scary to lose himself like that.
Rin pulled his head out from under the water, finally, shaking a lot of the water off. He had training to do, and damn it, he was going to do it! He couldn’t just keep his head underwater forever when he still had to surpass his brother, Yukio, and there were people he had to protect, and...
Well, he had to kick Satan’s ass!
He wasn’t going to let anything get between him and that goal. Sure, there were hurdles, but he was ready to jump them and defy everyone’s expectations.
