First days

Jul 29, 2008 07:04

Today is my first day of work at Bookshop Santa Cruz (oh yeah: yay! I got a job!). First days are stressful and weird, even at jobs you love, and today is going to be even more exhausting because after 8 hours of training I get to go directly into another 6 hours of being a nanny ( Read more... )

Congrats on the job my love! And thank you for the thoughtful reply on my post.

Book rec: I Am A Strange Loop, by: Douglas Hoffstader

if you're not so into reading philosophy books (it's written in a very human, understandable way though). I suggest an old favorite of mine which not many have read, called Snow In August.

And now a poem to top it off with:

This isn't typical of her writing, but I love it because it's so short, simple and sweet:

Afternoon on a Hill By: Edna St. Vincent Milay

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down!

Yoooou! Have I told you lately that I miss you? Because I do. Thanks for the book recs, I will definitely check them out. :) And that poem is beautiful. I feel like I've been in a lot of moments like that lately.

I'm so glad to hear that you're finally moving forward with your internships. Someday when we're reunited I want to hear all about your adventures.

I miss you too!

We shall see each other again, I'll tell you of my adventures in volunteerism, and you can tell me about yours with mischievous children.

Not officially, but if you gave me money I could buy you something with my discount. ;) Just don't tell my bosses. You should so come see me! I won't be able to talk much but I'll wave frantically from behind the counter. They keep us busy.

We should hang out sometime! Maybe grab some coffee or play another hilarious round of pool? I find it silly that we live in the same town and communicate primarily via livejournal.

today at work, an earthquake hit us. well, it was under us. so it tried to make us fall down. but we didn't. we stay pretty much intact. it was a 5.8. not as bad as that time in 89 when i was at candlestick park. but it shook us just the same. pretty much everyone in LA is good. no fatalities. but i think the Earth is mad at us. there were more earthquakes around the world. New Guinea. Japan. Alaska. so yeah. then everyone kept working after trying to phone loved ones but all circuits were busy. exciting stuff. until you realize it hit too close to home.

i love summer and i love winter. i love when the nights are long. i love when you hear the sound of the ocean dancing with the wind. everything is so beautiful. makes every day so much more better than the one yesterday.

We had an earthquake about the same mag up here this winter, but it didn't last nearly as long as yours did. I remember I was lying on my bed in the middle of a commercial break for "House" and all the sudden the whole room just jolted a few times, like the walls had been struck by something huge. No one was hurt, but my cell phone wouldn't work for about an hour, which made everything a little more dramatic.
