HDR - High Dynamic Range

I have long wondered why cameras need elaborate lighting setups to capure stuff that you or I can see quite easily with a Mk.I eyeball. It looks like someone is finally getting to grips with the problem.

The IOS 4.1 update to the iPhone 4 that came out on Wednesday gives it HDR capabillity.

Yeah, it mentioned that in the article - I think it does it by taking several pics in a row with different brightness settings.

Professionally, I add subsequent images of video together. you do loose frame-rate though.
CMOS sensors have much larger dynamic range than CCDs, but they are not as sensitive for low light use.
It really depends on exactly what you are trying to achieve, a better lens is usually the better, but most expensive solution, - but then i would say that!
