homeowners poll

Jan 19, 2009 20:35

for those of you who are homeowners, is there anything you'd do differently, pay more attention to, or pay less attention to the next time you buy a house or if you had the opportunity to re-do your last house purchase? what was the best thing you paid attention to that worked out really well? what was a pleasant surprise?

thanks!

Done differently: spent more time investigating the neighborhood. Like shopping at the grocery store, timing how long it takes to get to the highway, walking around at night...

Happy with: living room with vaulted ceiling, rooms all large enough, no structural problems, quickly livable

Yeah, what Sarah said - the grocery store situation is my number one complaint about where we live too.

Might also look around and give some thought to expansion - sooner than you think you'll be looking around thinking about which walls to remove and how to expand.

I'm really glad we have a pier and beam foundation. If you're looking over at Ira's neighborhood talk with him about the slab situation over there - they had major issues that were typical in the area - cardboard storm drain kinda things if I remember right.

Windows - our last house had super crummy windows. I didn't realize how cheap, leaky windows would be so drafty. If the windows are crummy take a look towards how many and if they're standard size to replace.

A pool is a MAJOR pain the the touckus. And expensive. We're looking at converting to salt water to try and lesson the maintenance. I'm ready to rip it up and have a "hole" feature in the yard.

tile is cold in the winter.

I didn't pay attention to the school Avery would be zoned too. And also, I didn't notice how tiny the two back bedrooms were and how little closet space there was. I was too insanely excited that I could actually afford a house like mine - I had set my sights way smaller. The badassness of my house and my neighbors very much outweighs the tiny bedrooms and closets though. And I'm going to try to get Avery transferred to Eanes elementary anyway. :)
