I also dismiss the Kindle - for the same reason I dismiss the Ipod. When you buy books for the Kindle, you can ONLY read them on the Kindle as far as I can tell. I am the kind of person that prefers to have a physical copy of the book so you can lend it out or borrow from a friend. Also, the reviews are mixed on Amazon. People are saying things like footnotes are being left out and the browser is buggy. Most of the negative reviews suggest waiting for version 2 - I say just buy the real book.
well... the kindle is just a tablet pc with limited capabilities. I'd think of it more as a gameboy for books, which gives portability at a price. I think the ability to subscribe to newspapers and magazines, and hold lots of books is absolutely amazing, and totally better than dragging ten books along on a vacation. And if the first version is somewhat buggy, the fact that they're unable to produce enough to keep up with the current demand shows that there is a huge interest in a portable reader, and amazon is a cool enough company to keep improving the firmware and making it easier and cheaper to use.
I am also troubled by the lack of reading in todays youth (wow, I sound like I'm 80). Although I can not be said to have read anything remotely intelligent, preferring my fantasy novels and such, reading anything at all is much better than just watching movies. It expands your imagination, vocabulary, spelling, and patience. Also, I like libraries.
I don't like the digital books though, b/c they hurt my eyes, otherwise it is a good concept. Especially since this may be a better way to get children who are glued to their gameboys and such to actually read something. Maybe if it's digital they'll pay attention to it? Idk.
