"Guess what I did today?!" she gushed with the excessive enthusiasm of someone who has done something none too bright. "I started 'Making the Cut,' that killer 30-day workout program by Jillian Michaels. You know -- the trainer from 'The Biggest Loser.' A lot of my friends are doing it and, hey, I thought would be a lot of fun ( Read more... )

Go you! I admire your energy and determination. If I wasn't so out of shape, I'd get up off the couch to give you a standing ovation. :)

Well, at least there's a caloric minimum. I don't like The Biggest Loser because it seems to me to promote a crazy eating-disorder mentality (it's perfectly OK to lose 30 lbs a week! and food is optional! six hours of exercise a day is normal!) but that just means it's reality TV, not that the trainers are necessarily that insane. Also, you seem to have a grip on reality: 5-8 lbs over, say, 5 weeks, is close to the average 'safe' recommendation. And reshaping is usually easier than actual weight dropping. I had a summer of crazy (possibly unhealthy) gym membership and I lost a whopping 3 lbs total but I got a lot thinner.

Is it a book or a video or a website or what? Not that I'm going to do it; trust me, I can't do anything at home right now, as it's 62 degrees or less inside my place, and that's just too cold to do most things without getting hurt. I'd still like to see exactly how out of shape I am, though. :)

Oh, yeah. Trust me -- I've been waging an ongoing war with the scale for 26 years. Been there and done ALL that and I wouldn't be doing this if it seemed insane. I know from spending 15 months dropping 50 pounds a couple years ago that 1-2 pounds a week is best, 3 pounds is okay, 4 pounds is a little suspect ( ... )
