Russian cruelties

For my history class we had to read an article on how Russian peasants punished criminals in the nineteenth century. They were really cruel. For example, if you stole something, you could be paraded down the street with the stolen item laced around your neck. As this happened, the townsfolk would jeer and mock you. You gave some pretty light examples of what was done. In some countries you'd get your hand chopped off for stealing. Other places you'd be stoned to death, get your tongue cut off for other various crimes.

The witch burning...that wasn't a punishment that was complete paranoia and stupidity..if you float you're a witch! News to you people back then you'd float too!!!

I think that it worked and most likely would still work today to some degree would you want to steal again if you got your hand chopped off? I mean if you stole again they'd prob chop off other hand and if did it again...think of what else they could chop off *shudders* We all know also that they wouldn't be concerned about you going without pain so no numbing stuff for you! I'd rahter buy everyone drinks and ask for forgiveness than get my hand chopped off so in comparasion..that's not that bad.
