Change doesn't happen right away, Richard. It's hard to do things differently, to try and alter a part of who you are. I think the fact that you acknowledge what and why you want to change is a big step in and of itself
( ... )
The first step in any change is realizing that you want a change. So you've already managed that part. And it sounds like you know what you want to change -- to become more assertive/self-directed? Yes? Or have I gotten this completely wrong?
It's not easy to change something you realize as a fundamental part of yourself. It's bound to come slow and with lots of work. But you're trying, and any encouragement I can give is yours for the taking. I do agree, however, that you don't want to become a complete bitch -- that would be too much of a change, and not a good one.
I believe you can do this without the outcome being too drastic or negative. Work on the small things and the larger things will pull themselves together.
