What do you mean by 'determined by ps'? like those witch are in ps as presets? That's the way I put textures on: Open file with texture you want witch you saved on your computer, then sign it with a mask tool(I don't remember if it's the right name for this tool because I don't have ps on this computer:P) then copy it, go back to your icon and just past it on it, then change it for example to opacity or screen. Is this what you want?

Yeah, I think so. I mean this tool that creates a dotted rectangle around your selected area:) which is a mask
