Today I discovered this excerpt from a speech given by soon-to-be-president Lincoln in 1859, on the subject of discoveries and inventions. This paragraph in particular is a pretty decent summarization of the scientific method as applied to steam power, including mentions of trial/error, experimentation, and induction.
