"Patriotic"

"I am very, very patriotic."

I can appreciate that. I happen to believe that being patriotic also means defending the rights that the flag stands for. I've brought this up before, and I'm bringing it up again:

Flag burning is a protected right. The Supreme Court said so.

Should these kids be in jail?

The Supreme Court did say so. But they didn't say reckless endangerment, arson, breach of peace, criminal mischief and other offenses are legal which is what these kids are in jail for.

The lit a flag, which did not belong to them, that was hanging from a building, that they were not residents of, in a private residential neighborhood. This is comparable to someone walking up to my house and lighting my porch on fire.

You want to burn a flag, then great. Just make sure its your own and you are doing so in a responsible manner that isn't putting people who have nothing to do with you at risk.

You're right--I just meant they shouldn't be in jail for the flag burning part.

From the information presented it doesn't look like they've been charged with flag burning, though I suppose "other charges" could mean flag burning. But I doubt it, if that was the case then the reporter would have listed it in the specifics rather than "other charges" and then could have had a legitimate claim to the attention getting headline he used.

i agree with stmachiavelli on those points.. you want to burn a flag, all well and good.. the Supreme Court's rulings allow for that as part of our Constitutional rights...
but make sure its your own flag, and not one hanging from someone's private property..

i think those two Yale students should get punished for it.. and depending on those charges, i think they should also have their student visas yanked...arson is a felony
