Whenever I buy new cat furniture, the cats will ignore it until I sprinkle catnip on it and/or put them on it deliberately. Eventually, when I've given up on their using it, then they suddenly become interested.

Well that was freaky. I was just reading your entry when I got the notification you'd commented.

And yeah, I should've known that they'd come to it on their own terms. I was just getting a little concerned. This thing cost $150 and I was beginning to think it was going to become an expensive clothes rack! So glad they are enjoying it. They do look adorable up there watching the birds.

That is one heck of a nice cat tree!! Sadly cats are like children. Buy them the coolest stuff that you know you would want if you were a cat (or a kid)...and they ignore it. Bring home a large box or a paperbag...hours of entertainment.

Did you see my post last week about the baby raccoon? Oh it was so darn cute!!

I didn't even open LJ all last week, so I'd missed it. How adorable!! I wish you could've gotten a picture.

And yeah, you're right about the way cats (and kids) behave. Much of the time, my babies' favorite toy has been something like a plastic bag or wad of aluminum foil. OR, the holy grail of cat toys, the ring off a milk jug lid. Evidently those things are made of crack.

Once my cats were over the 'OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT STRUCTURE OF IMMINENT DEATH DOING IN MY HOUSE????' phase, they'd be all over that thing! Especially because it's in front of a sunny window which features FREE BIRDS FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE!

Anyway.

Your spirits seem to have lifted and I don't know if that's just a temporary thing, but I was glad to read this lighthearted entry.

I haven't been able to capture my raccoon family on film (on pixels?) yet, but my sister-in-law threatens to send me a photo she took of one of them while she stayed at my house when I was in Ottawa.

Hi there! I think it's probably a mix of anti-depressant, getting past my birthday, and just the fact that things are hopefully somewhat better in general, but yeah, the clouds seem to have cleared from my mind a bit. I still have my moments...had a TOTAL meltdown Sunday night, crying hysterically. I'd gotten some of mom's stuff for the house, AND some of my grandmother's things as well. (I'll post a picture of what was such a bittersweet catalyst.) But yeah, most of the time, I can hold it together and even be somewhat cheerful. I tell ya, just getting over my damn birthday was a huge thing. I was dreading it so ( ... )

I am often awake at odd hours of the early morning and have observed entire families of raccoons, some the size of Volkswagen Beatles, dining on my deck.

Did you know that they wash their hands after eating? And they'll even wash their food if it's got dirt on it they have access to a a bowl of water. They totally do! I have watched them do this and you have just got to love a critter who has impeccable personal hygiene, especially when you yourself are an obsessive hand-washer.

I love the hands to death, they're really not paws. It makes them so much more humanish. I had a skittish guy eating cat food from a bowl that was right up against the glass doors a few weeks ago. He didn't trust me as I stood there AWWWWWWW!ing at him all over the place so he kept a distance from the bowl, and streeeeeeeeetched his arm way over, picked up just one a piece of kibble at a time with one hand and bring it to his mouth, without ever once taking his eyes off me.

So adorable! And also funny!

Yes, I knew about the food washing thing! Fortunately this was cat food straight out of a bag, so it was evidently satisfactory for my little guy. S/he was so close to me, it was crazy. Yes, there was a door separating us, but it's a full-view glass door. For all it knew, I was really standing four feet away with no separation. Oreo was at my feet, watching it intently. It seemed completely unafraid. I loved how it would scoop up a handful of kibble, then sit there chomping on it. This guy would look down for a bit to get the cat food, but did somewhat keep an eye on me as it ate. I was entranced.

I'm somewhat obsessive on hand-washing as well, so yeah, I totally respect that about an animal, too!

HAH! I talk like that to my cats every single day. At night, it's "ready to go night nights with mama?" And then in the morning, "kitties want to get din dins?" I probably said something similar to the raccoon, although at least I had my glasses on! 8-)

And thank you. I still have my moments, but...yeah. It's better. If you have half an hour or so, read my next entry. It's kinda enlightening, I guess. ;-)

That is the most insane contraption I've ever seen for a pet! My dachshunds would probably love it... ;)

I joined a CSA since I can't grow anything myself and I'm loving all of the fresh fruit and veggies. I even met a new veggie, Swiss chard, last night that I've never had before. And it was awesome! The tomatoes we've been getting have been incredible.

It is an impressive piece, that's for sure. I looked for weeks...WEEKS before deciding on that specific one. I had it narrowed down to three and agonized over my decision.

I LOVE being able to just go to the backyard and pick dinner. There are few things quite that satisfying. And yeah, Swiss chard is awesome! I'm growing lots of different lettuces and greens, so there's probably some in the mix that I planted. I just essentially have a clump o'salad growing back there. And collard greens. :-)

There are ripe tomatoes coming in already in New England? Like vine-ripened? That seems really early! We don't even usually get them here until the end of the month! Maybe they had a really hardy start in a greenhouse before planting?

I know that this is an organic and locally sourced CSA so I don't think they're greenhouse started, but maybe? I've been getting 1-2 each week and they're juicy and sweet and amazing. I'm not sure what "type" of tomato they are since there's just so many. We've had a very rainy spring / early summer. The ones I got this week weren't ready, but 2-3 days on my windowsill and they're red and ready!

They could possibly be a variety called Early Girl, but even those don't usually mature down here until the beginning-middle of July. You have some sort of supertomato up there, I think!
