disconcerting
it is very disconcerting when your assistant principal comes to your class, sits down like a student, takes notes/does the CW the kids are doing, then takes the quiz and asks for it to be graded.
somehow this is way more disconcerting / frightening than if they come in, take notes on you teaching method, ask the students what they're learning, etc.

on a wintry night in 2004 (i think), i went to the (Mass) state house to demonstrate against the anti-gay-marriage amendment du jour. people didn't talk much -- it was cold and people mostly used what energy they had to chant and to keep themselves warm, and i didn't know anyone ( Read more... ) -

scattered election thoughts
my election night was probably a little different from yours. i mostly watched the returns at school, with the kids.
i promise you, there is nothing like seeing 200 teenagers get so deeply involved in an election they can't even vote in. i mean, hello, who stays at school for an extra 4 hours to watch the news?! they were elated when any state ( Read more... ) -
voting someone else's conscience
i'm the type to vote my conscience. i won't vote on a ballot measure unless i've read it myself and i somewhat understand the impact, and (i'm sorry to admit) i've always sort of been frustrated with people who just go and vote according to someone's endorsements (whether it's a news paper or a political party or some interest group ( Read more... ) -

it takes so much *effort* to be an informed voter in this city! california has 12 measures on the ballot, and san francisco has an additional 22. (yes, *additional*.) there should be a law against that. maybe i should write a ballot measure. seems like i'm the only one in the city who didn't put on on this year. *sigh* i still have about 10 ( Read more... ) -
