I ventured into the world of plants last year by getting myself a cactus, for several different reasons which I won't go into.  I have learned a lot since day 1, such as the fact that cacti need sunlight for nutrients, and without adequate sunlight they will grow etoliated and thin.  Water deprivation causes the flesh of the cactus to shrink.  I  ( Read more... )

FYI: when exposed to air, H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) becomes water. It also is not a good sterilization technique. It will debride any loose material, but is NOT antibacterial like alcohol, chlorhex, etc. . .

Just a lil' tip from the medical field.

I just tested something I probably shouldn't have... and it didn't taste like water yo...

Shawn, I like your drive for experimentation, but she is right that H2O breaks down naturally into oxygen and water when exposed to air.

2 H2O2 --> 2 H2O + O2

I did not want to introduce any strong chemicals into the plants system, because they would be absorbed through the open flesh of the cactus. I used hydrogen peroxide for the exact reason you stated, it becomes water and oxygen.

Hydrogen Peroxide is a very good sterilizer, though. It should work just fine, I imagine. I have read that sprinkling sulfur over freshly cut cactus will keep the wound clean and will not harm the plant, but I have no sulfur and I don't know where to get any.
