...as in Hurricane Ophelia. I am scared for my family in Florida and Savannah. They are saying that this storm is a category 1, but who knows what this thing will do by Monday

I am right there with you sweets! Please tell them regardless of anything they must evacuate. Regardless!!!!! Most hurricanes are known to take the same path as the previous hurricane...lets hope that is just a myth!
My mom would evacuate in a heartbeat, but my dad is too stubborn. You know how those old-fashioned, die-hard Southerners are. It's crazy, I know, but that's how he is. :/
My mother absolutely would not evacuate our building last year, mainly because of the dog. Then again, we lived about a mile from the beach & neither of those storms looked anywhere near as scary as Katrina did even days in advance. And my building was STRONG!
I hope your family is alright. I've been watching Ophelia, too. As much as I miss Florida, it sucks that so many hurricanes have been forming these past few years. They say these things go in cycles--that there are periods that are more turbulent, & then these areas will go for years without seeing a hurricane. (My mother's aunt, who passed in 2003, lived in Boca Raton for 35 years & never saw a hurricane there.) If this is a cycle, I hope it's over soon!
My personal proclivities are in line with your dad...
But one of my oldest and best friend just lost everything in NO.
Just have your mom take the sentimental things that matter most. The rest is replaceable; no the sentimental. Either way, what matters is that they're ok.
Awww, thanks for writing and the concern, Dude. We talked about that last night. I'm not going to worry. Like you said, their safety is what's most important.

My dad is a hurricane-aholic, and watches everything like a hawk, and he thinks Savannah's pretty much in the clear now. He had to go to a meeting Friday afternoon before anyone could leave work at the Dept. of Transportation to make sure they were prepared to bus people out if it came to that, though!
