On the passing of OWL and the raising of wands

May 01, 2012 12:09

I've read so many entries this morning about the passing of OWL--tributes, elegies, rants--and all of them were intelligent and illuminating and justified, and I think that mulling them all has finally helped me to crystallize my own feelings on the matter in word format. I thank you all for sharing your perspectives and your feelings. It has been ( Read more... )

As I said to Mara on my page: Why memorialise something we still have?

Nothing stays the same, but this, we still have, perhaps a little changed, but I refuse to mourn what still exists.

The community, many of the fics, the creativity, the skill, all these things, are still here with us.

As you remark, we have all changed and all moved on invarious ways But have I lost interest in Scoffy or in you because you mostly write in other fandoms? Have friendships that deserve the name withered and died because they only existed inside OWL? Pish.

I think you express your feelings very well, Bluey, I really do. And I am not going to say that those who are raising wands are wrong to do so, because everyone's expressions of emotion are valid.

But I for one refuse to mourn something that isn't dead.

Intriguingly enough, I seem to be a bit unfazed by it all. I didn't have the emotional attachment to the site that many others had and though I can understand the pain that it's caused, it's not the first archive in this corner of fandom to go, nor - I'm afraid - will it probably be the last.

I think these things are often cyclical and as iffy as that sounds, it's simply the truth.

No need to shuffle off! Never let it be said that people should be afraid to give their honest opinions in this journal. ~squishes you~

And you are right, of course: these things are cyclical, and it isn't the first archive to perish. It won't be the last, either, although I do hope that more stories and archive content will be able to be rescued in the future. This was a particularly bad situation, in which assistance was offered and not only refused, but effectively... the library was burned out of spite and stubbornness. There is no way around acknowledging that. That is one reason why I think feelings are running especially strong about this ( ... )
