Grimmjaw attempted to sneak back into Las Noches late in the evening, opening the portal directly into the hall outside his bedroom and stalking in, hoping that Ulquiorra either wouldn't notice his arrival or would ignore it, the latter being more likely, but still, neither were probable. He sighed and lay down on his bed, resting his head on his hands. He'd spent the last several hours just wandering around the living world aimlessly, feeling stupid for his reaction to Ulquiorra's revelation.
Ulquiorra paused and looked up from his pointless perusing on the human internet when he felt Grimmjaw's reiatsu reappear in Las Noches, within his own quarters this time. He frowned at the time; shortly before midnight, as Ichimaru-sama had instructed. He was pushing it, though. He'd spent nearly twenty-hour hours there.
Standing, he made his way to Grimmjaw's quarters, annoyed that he seemed to be pushing at his boundaries again. He'd been tolerable for so long; it was irritating to have to reprimand him for the same mistakes he'd had to reprimand him for in the past.
He stopped in the doorway and gave him an irritated look. "Your human world privileges will be revoked if you revert to abusing them again."
Grimmjaw stared at the ceiling. "I came back in time."
"You were pushing it," Ulquiorra told him flatly. "A day in the human world is quadruple the time needed to do any of our longest missions there. And you left the homunculi's hours ago."
Grimmjaw turned his head lightly towards Ulquiorra. "Was I needed?"
"You might have been. We are at war, Sexta, and Aizen-sama should not have to dispatch needed Arrancar to go fetch you from a plane you have no right to be in."
Grimmjaw frowned. "I got permission."
"Just because Ichimaru-sama permitted you that long does not mean you were to take advantage of it," Ulquiorra said irritably. "You are supposed to use it at your own discretion. And wasting an entire day in a world filled with our enemy is not acceptable, especially since there was no reason for it."
Grimmjaw scowled. "Ichimaru-sama gave me permission. I used the time he gave me as I saw fit. You're not in charge, Cuatro."
"I am still your superior, and I still have the same authority over you that I have always had," Ulquiorra reminded him. "The revelation of my true number changes nothing. Your behavior is still unacceptable."
"My behavior?" Grimmjaw sat up, leaning against the wall. "All I did was spend a day in the living world. I didn't do anything stupid or irresponsible. I'm back now. Nothing happened."
"It could have," Ulquiorra said flatly. "Even the first knows better than to spend a day there alone. You are far too reckless sometimes."
Grimmjaww shook his head. "Whatever."
Ulquiorra narrowed his eyes. He hated that word. "Stop acting juvenile. You know Aizen-sama has been testy of late, and the homunculi's curiosity has all but destroyed some of his most important plans. At this rate you are going to draw his anger to yourself again and lose your rank. Then what difference will mine make, since you seem to dislike it so much now?"
"What the hell do you care if I lose my rank?" Grimmjaw bit back. "And I won't for something as stupid and little as spending a day in the living world."
"You're right," Ulquiorra said irritably, "I do not care if you lose your rank or not. So continue acting recklessly until you do so, and then perhaps I will not have to bother so much with the next Sexta."
Grimmjaw paused, Ulquiorra's words causing his chest to clench uncomfortably for a moment before he shook it off, annoyed that he'd reacted that way. "Fine, then stop, lecturing me and let me make my mistakes so you can get your new Sexta, Prim--" Grimmjaw dropped his eyes to the floor. "...Cuatro."
"I do not want another Sexta," Ulquiorra all but growled, glaring at him now. It was incredible that Grimmjaw could completely miss the point of everything he'd just said, and the Espada's thickheadedness was causing his anger to rise. "I came here to make sure you hold yourself in check so that that doesn't happen, since you seem so completely incapable of recognizing for yourself when you are acting stupidly. But if you are so determined to return to the lower ranks, then so be it. It is not my responsibility to keep you from doing so."
"You just said you didn't care." Grimmjaw said, slightly surprised at how angry Ulquiorra was getting. "One day in the living world isn't going to make me lose my rank, especially when I had permission from Ichimaru-sama. I behaved while I was there. I haven't done anything wrong."
"This time," Ulquiorra said shortly. "Regardless, it is not only your behavior that I'm warning you against. Whatever passive enemies we once had may have been made aggressive by our involvement with the human girl, in addition to your shinigami boy's uncontrolled Masked transformation. If you are going to spend a day somewhere for no reason, spend it where you cannot be hunted. That is common sense, Sexta."
Ulquiorra had had enough of the conversation now. He'd come to yell at him for being a fool, and he was fairly certain he'd gotten his point across. He turned to go.
Grimmjaw frowned and got up off of his bed, walking over to Ulquiorra and stopping him by taking hold of his forearm. "Ulquiorra," he said, genuinely confused, "why are you so angry?"
"Because you are an idiot," Ulquiorra answered, turning to look at him from over his shoulder, "and it irritates me. I thought you wanted me to leave."
"I wasn't stupid. I was with Envy for most of the time, and avoided danger when I wasn't." Grimmjaw sighed, letting go of Ulquiorra's arm. "And I never said that."
"The danger this time may be internal," Ulquiorra told him. He slipped his hands into his pockets and turned enough to regard him more comfortably. "Aizen-sama is not pleased about what happened. He's looking for something to release his anger on, and you have always made a good target for him. Try to think about what you're doing for once, until he gets over this ridiculous attachment and is able to act rationally again." He turned to go again.
Grimmjaw didn't reach out to stop Ulquiorra, but spoke again. "Why do you care whether Aizen-sama targets me or not?"
Ulquiorra began to tell him that he didn't care, that he would have lectured any other subordinate in this manner had they acted so stupidly, but paused when he realized that wasn't exactly true. He did care that Grimmjaw kept his position, and he wasn't sure if it was because he had been spending so much time with him recently or if it originated from some other, currently unknown reason, and it was disconcerting enough that he could not yet settle on an answer. He turned and looked at Grimmjaw with a frown.
"...You're Sexta," he told him after a moment, but he couldn't think of a follow-up to that statement, so instead he averted his gaze and turned again to go.
Grimmjaw frowned back. Ulquiorra was acting very strangely. His eyes went wide suddenly as he realized something. "...Since when do you care about Sexta?" he asked Ulquiorra's back.
Ulquiorra stopped, stiffening. "I don't," he said icily, barely turning his head to the side.
Grimmjaw nodded slowly, staring at Ulquiorra. "I see."
That comment angered Ulquiorra. He didn't. He shouldn't. He was merely Sexta and he meant nothing to him. He was only concerned with upholding his rank because it would benefit Aizen-sama in the future. That was the way it should be.
The fact that it wasn't was not acceptable.
"Do not forget that," he told Grimmjaw, and started back toward his own quarters again. This matter would require some reevaluation on his own part, and some reorganization of a few things.
Grimmjaw's brow furrowed in confusion. What had just happened? Ulquiorra was clearly contradicting himself and acting very strangely. Grimmjaw could only think of one reason for the smaller Espada's strange behavior, but that definitely didn't make sense. He tried to push that possibility from his mind. There was no way that Primera...no...Cuatro, actually cared. Impossible. Grimmjaw stood in the doorway to his room for several long minutes just staring at the end of the hallway Ulquiorra had disappeared down before finally making his way back to the bed and staring up at the ceiling until he finally fell asleep several hours later.
