He drummed. Clumsy and loud, sticks randomly beating againts the snare, the tom-toms and feet smashing against the bass drum pedals.

He drummed. Sweat running down his face and dripping down his hair. His shirt drenched with sticky sweat, his palms slippery.

He drummed to forget, to release his inner frustrations, to let his inner emotions run free.

He drummed, not because he could but he drummed because he wanted to. He had to. He couldn't care less what others thought of him. Of how much noise he was making at such an hour. He just kept on banging and smashing and hitting till his arms were numb. Till blisters formed on his ungloved hands. Till he was unable to tell the tears from the sweat running down his face.

He kept going.

And going.

Until, with a clatter, his sticks fell from his hands, sticky with sweat and a hint of blood.

And this is where he'd come in, cigarette between his fingers. He'd wrap his arms around the drummer, lead him back to their bed, laid them down upon the soft, cool sheets and wrapped himself, his being around the other man.

Silence. There were no needs for words, all of them having been used up in the past. They meant nothing now after all the times it was repeated to him.

There was nothing he could do to break this cycle, nothing he could say.

He knew why he drummed. It was his escape. It was familiar. It was a habit. One that he could not break out of. It was something he had since young, his own special way of coping with life. It was all he had back then. And even if it was not all he had now, even if he had much more now compared to then, the habit was too familiar to break, too comforting.

With a sigh, he slipped out of bed and grabbed the first aid kit, a cool bowl of water together with a cloth and a pair of boxers.

He stripped the drummer, always relieved to see the rise and fall of his chest, that he was breathing. He ran the wet towel across his body, wiping away the sweat and washing away the blood from his hands before wrapping them and kissing each finger as he did so.

The drummer was still awake, just not conscious, but to him, that was fine, it was okay.

With a soft smile, he finished cleaning up and put away the kit before dressing him in his favourite boxers. Just before he laid back down next to his lover, he slipped the envelope and letter that started it all into a small black box under the bed, never to be seen again.

Finally, Aoi slipped back into the bed and placed a small kiss on his lover's forehead before slipping into a world of dreams, his love safely tucked between his arms.

Aoi knew.

Kai drummed so that he would be able to smile the next day and to keep smiling for the days after. Just like how a phoenix had to burst into flames before being reborn, Kai had to wear himself out before he was whole again.
