I've been a fan of Rick Riordan's YA books ever since miyyu recommended The Lightning Thief several years back. I've meant since that time to check out his mystery novels for adults as well, but just recently got around to reading the first one, Big Red TequilaThe main character, Tres Navarre, has just returned to his hometown of San Antonio, TX, for ( Read more... )

I didn't know Rick Riordan wrote adult novels. My son is a big fan of his and we have most of his YA novels -- those we don't we've borrowed from the library numerous times.

Thanks for the rec. I'll have to give it a read!

Note: Tres? That means three in spanish. Weird name.

I hope you enjoy it! And I'm glad to hear that your son enjoys the YA books. I was obsessed with Greek mythology as a kid, so I love the Percy Jackson series for that reason as well as the fun and awesome writing. And it makes me happy that Riordan is introducing kids to Greek and Egyptian mythology.

As far as Tres, the character's name is actually Jackson Navarre III, so he goes by Tres for that reason :)

Well that makes sense then! I was wondering -- I know a lot of people (and writers) use unusual (and I think made up) names and this one was new to me. :)

I haven't read the Percy Jackson series however I find the chapter titles to be extraordinarily amusing. I'd like to someday, if I can find the time. I have been diligently searching for the Julia Spencer-Fleming novels at my local library and have located several but it appears they don't have the first one, other than in audio cassette version (which I can't play). Is it okay if I start at the second one?

Oh, and I might mention (if you have time) I wrote a fic over the weekend and just posted it. it's short - only 600 or so words, and definitely work-safe. :)

Yes, the chapter titles are one of my very favorite things about the Percy Jackson books! But I highly recommend everything about them :) I was hoping the Tres Navarre books would also have entertaining chapter titles, but this one didn't. I'm still holding out hope for the later books ( ... )
